I read an article the other day that was so good it might need to become a blog series.
It’s about words.
Stop that.
It’s going to be great, I promise.
English is a funny language and apparently if it’s not your mother tongue, can be quite difficult to learn. So naturally it stands to reason there would be a large collection of foreign words with no direct English equivalent.
Let’s explore that.
- Kummerspeck (German)
Excess weight gained from emotional overeating.
Literally, grief bacon.
Grief bacon!
It’s official.
Kummerspeck is now my new favorite word.
Do I like bacon?
Indeed I do.
Do I care that it’s bad for you?
No. I do not.
2. Mencolek (Indonesian)
The old trick where you tap someone lightly on the opposite shoulder from behind to fool them.
Where was this word when I was young?
I totally slayed Mencolek in the 3rd grade.
3. Seigneur-terraces (French)
Coffee shop dwellers who sit at tables a long time, but spend very little money.
Funny….
In English we just call them cheap.
4. Slampadato (Italian)
Someone addicted to the UV glow of tanning salons.
I think we all know one of those.
And finally..
5. Pana Po’o (Hawaiian)
To scratch your head in order to help you remember something you’ve forgotten.
This is not a technique I’m familiar with, but then I’ve never been to Hawaii so what do I know?
But to hell with remembering where the keys are …
This is pure brilliance.
I can make a weekend of meals with a package of potato rolls, a couple of tomatoes and a pound of bacon…

box wine vs bottle wine? Yes, we do know the difference. I went to a fancy schmancy place for supper with Gary a couple weeks ago. Had two glasses of my white wine. It was BOX wine! AT $7.99 a glass??? How could I tell? Box wine gives me a hangover with ONE glass. Bottle wine…………does not. Two glasses? I was hurtin’………….But the place is closed now so I can do nothing about it.

Wine in a box should be illegal.

One thing I’ve always wondered is the high IQ society MENSA is called MENSA, because mensa in Spanish means stupid…….go figure? 🤔

Bacon rules!
And I didn’t know the Mensa definition, but clearly geniuses have a sense of humor.

Maybe, or maybe the founder was so smart they didn’t realize the translation, lol. Oh yeah bacon is good on any and everything, I just recently tried chocolate bacon, two of my favorite things and they go soooo well together! 🥓🥓🥓🍫🍫🍫

Putting that on my list!

I believe that in English #3 would be tightwads. The other words are perfectly unique and wonderful in their specificity. Cool find.

I had no idea they even made wine in a box until a couple years ago when I’d occasionally get assigned to straightening up the aisle the liquor was in at work. I don’t drink at all, so have no opinion on its quality, but it just seems like a bizarre concept….

Not being aware of wine in a box is a good thing.

Glad I can put a word to the weight gain now, other than “menopause”.

I’d really like try American crispy bacon one day. Seems right up my ally.

As much as I love bacon, I can’t tolerate it limp and half cooked.
LikeLiked by 2 people
😱 but…but… it’s cured so it’s practically cooked anyway! And limp just means you taste the chewy fatty meat!

Nope. It’s golden brown and crispy or nothing!

River,
Brilliant! I’m incorporating all of these words into my vocabulary. I may butcher the correct pronunciation…but I’m from Texas, so I’m allowed! And yes, please, do make this a new series! Heeheehee! Mona

These are new to me. Love them! My old favorite is the German scheidenfreude (I may be misspelling that.) It’s taking pleasure in the misfortune of others. Probably something nobody wants to admit to, but oh so human!

I read one the other day, in Danish it’s a compound word, meaning “toothbutter” — butter spread so thick it’s toothsome.

As you know I am catching up on all of your witty ‘adventures’ so I do hope there are more posts in this series. If not I shall be very grigastagro (disappointed….not in a particular language but just a word I made up. You can have that)
