Natural?

.

I’m all about trying new household products.

.

.

A natural grapefruit scented cleaner? With a pamplemousse translation?

Bring it!

.

.

Okay, no unicorns is a tad disappointing… but it smelled great and worked quite well.

Until the day I used it to wipe down our smooth surface stovetop and then turned on a burner.

Holy craparoni! The lovely fruity smell went from delightful wafts of citrus to noxious room clearing fumes in no time flat.

.

.

And upon further examination the oh so natural ingredients were anything but.

I read sodium gluconate is derived from plants, but it doesn’t sound like I’m going to be picking it off a tree in a pesticide free orchard anytime soon. Turns out it’s the sodium salt of gluconic acid.

Blech!

  1. OK … so ammonia doesn’t smell all that good at first, but you can use it safely in microwaves and stove tops in weak solutions. Great for burned on stuff.
Grapefruit? Who comes up with these ideas? Great fruit. Eat it all the time. Never occurred to me to use it to clean stuff …

  2. I love the smell of Method products and the pretty colours of their products. But when I had my housekeeper training, the only products they let us use were white vinegar and bicarb. Everything else was just with slightly dampened microfibre.

  3. Put some in your bath water, and you should come out smelling like a rose and looking like a grapefruit — or is it the other way around? In any case, think how good you’ll smell (just remember not to sit on a hot stove).

  4. Grapefruit IS a delicious fragrance, but I’d recommend you get a bottle of grapefruit essential oil instead if that’s what’s lured you in. ‘Greenwashing’ is all over the place because they know people want to do the right thing. Sometimes the more appealing the packaging is, the more wary we should be. Good on you for trying, though!
