Look who’s back.

.

I went out to the mailbox the other day, battling a fierce wind and falling snow, and saw paw prints. This isn’t unusual at our house, critters visit on a daily basis. But when I came back in the house and heard a cry outside, I knew.

The lovely stray cat we’d taken in, fallen in love with and then had to return to his owners? Was back.

.

.

He was soaking wet, shivering and skittish…. but I managed to lure him into the barn with a bowl of food.

.

.

The poor little guy. What the hell! Why was he out in the cold again?

.

.

After two full tins of Fancy Feast, he jumped up on the pool table….

.

.

And took a bath with the heat blowing straight on him.

.

.

I left him warm, fed and comfortable…. and headed into the house to call his owner and rip her a new one.

.

One not so polite phone call later she showed up with a carrier and swore she made a vet appointment for him to be neutered next week and has done her best to keep him in the house. But she also told me her husband opened the bedroom window a crack and the cat escaped. (Open window, with no screen, in Maine, in February? Not likely) She said he’d only been gone for an hour but our house is over a mile away so I doubt that too.

I swear if we hadn’t adopted Dudley…. I would have just kept him this time.

      1. We had a male cat (neutered) that would try to run away. He was an inside cat, but he got out several times. But, I was always immediately on his trail, and I never came back without him. I think I would have called you and asked you to be on the alert.

      2. To be fair.. the first time he came she did contact the police and the Maine Lost Cat Recovery site. She also put a collar with her phone number on it after his first stay with us. She does seem to care, just isn’t very responsible.

  1. Why pray tell do people ever bother dropping the word stray from the word cat ? They are inexorably, irrevocably, and inevitably linked. If there is a door, window, or inter galactic portal they will stray. Reports need to be filed on the mothership on a regular basis. Still it is more fun to blame the strayee than the strayed. Someone told me more than once cats will be er cats.

  2. I don’t blame your last sentence at all. I call bs on the window tale. It was 33 last night HERE and we CRACKED our window, not cat lifted it.
I had an escape artist cat for years, which with four kids in an out meant she was an indoor-outdoor cat and not ideal for us or the military post we inhabited.
Once she was gone for two days. I honestly assumed she’d been eaten by a gator or ‘stolen’. She is now the cat of my father-in-law and she’s still an escape artist, but with fewer opportunities.
I think the third time, maybe you have two kittehs?

  3. A friend of mine became a cat owner this way. The neighbour’s cat kept coming over. He eventually asked if they wanted to relinquish ownership and they said yes. Maybe you should ask if they want to have you adopt it?
