.
I stumbled on a rather odd Facebook group page the other day.
.
.
And while I doubt I’ll join, I can appreciate the sentiment.
.

Red’s Eats is a Wiscasset landmark, a popular tourist destination and a long running bone of contention for anyone who has to drive through the area. Locals laugh at the outta staters who stand on line for an hour for what is seriously sub par seafood. (And trust me, they’re all outta staters… no self respecting Mainer would pay $38 for a lobster roll.) But the reason behind the page and its flamboyant parade of finger waves are the atrocious traffic jams this silly little take out trailer produces. A drive through town that should take 3 minutes? Will sometimes take you 30.
So without further ado… I bring you the only appropriate thing to do should you happen to drive past Red’s Eats.

Look! They even have tee shirts.

P.S…. if you visit Maine and decide you have to try this universally loathed establishment? Please unfriend me first.

Mainers are WEIRD… and I’ve lived in Texas AND Florida…

You say that like it’s a bad thing….

Then consider yourself a Mainer.

$38 for a lobster roll?
Thanks but no thanks.

Lobster is expensive. And I don’t mind paying for quality, but this isn’t even close.

Becoming more famous all the time then. lol

It constantly amazes natives how popular this place is.

Now all I want is a lobster roll from Red’s. Can Uber Eats deliver to Cali?

Probably. But I don’t think I’d trust the mayo..

Wow….that bad huh? Almost as bad as living here and having someone from east Texas tell you that the TexMex Food where they come from is better than real Mexican food in El Paso. Well, maybe I should start a similar trend and give the finger to those who think TexMex is genuine Mexican food.

Maybe that’s what annoys me more than the traffic. They’re selling frozen Canadian lobster as fresh Maine lobster and making you stand in line outside for an hour and a half to pay $38. Only tourists would do this!

I can see why Mainers get so upset. It’s sacrilegious to see a local business do something so shady. And I would NEVER stand in like for a $38 lobster roll!! As a Texas even that’s a sin and I come from a place in Texas that landlocked!!

If I’m sitting in a lovely waterfront restaurant, sipping a cocktail and being served a fresh Maine lobster roll? I would consider paying that price. But standing near the road, waiting at a take out trailer and having to eat standing up? No.

Believe it or not we have the same problem with chic a fil on Federal highway—you don’t come to Fort Lauderdale for our ‘class’!!

I don’t go there because of the heat. And now, your Governor.

Only one way through town? That’s sad.

Basically, yes. It’s Route 1 which is the coastal highway in Maine. It’s also right before the bridge and there’s no avoiding that.

Sounds like an east coast version of Voodoo Doughnut in Portland. Tourists love it and queue up in lines that stretch for blocks. Meanwhile, locals know that Blue Star Donuts is far superior (and less crowded).

Always follow the locals. Tourists are clueless….

I agree. If it’s a little rinky dink (on the corner type) food place, you just gotta know it won’t be ‘fresh’ lobster.
Even I won’t pay premium money for subzero (frozen) seafood.

We actually have lots of wonderful hole in the wall lobster shacks. This isn’t one of them…

Hmm – maybe it’s up to the locals to let those (uhh) foreigners know? Or just build another road/bridge around the place so you don’t have to be troubled by them?

There’s been talk of a bypass for the last 20 years but the businesses keep blocking it.

Hmm I see. We have a similar problem. One grocery store (a small town IGA) stops any other store from coming to town. We are filling up with all manner of fast food, but only one grocery.
I’ve been here for nearly 25 years and it’s the same deal.

Local businesses love the traffic. Local people, not so much.

We ate at Red’s once . . . in 2004. It was not the best Lobster Roll we had that trip. 😀

But probably the most expensive.

It was about $16 back then. We ate down on the dock . . . while fending off the gluttonous gulls!

Gulls are opportunists. They used to steal entire loaves of bread out of our bags when I lived on the island.

Why doesn’t Red Lobster have lobster rolls? Just saying…I’ve never seen one on their menu.

It’s pretty much a Maine thing. Or regional to northern New England anyway.
