A definite change in perception.

.

The recent death of Betty White got me thinking about that popular old show The Golden Girls. To be honest I never watched it, but I caught glimpses now and then.

They were women of a certain age dealing with retirement, the loss of spouses and age related illnesses. They were witty and sarcastic yes, but let’s face it…. more than a little frumpy.

.

.

The show I did watch religiously? Sex and the City. Four women in the prime of their lives romping their way through midtown Manhattan boudoirs with unrestrained glee.

Frumpy? Not hardly…

.

.

And in case you’ve been living under a rock, SATC has returned to HBO under the new name “And Just Like That”. We catch up with 3 of the 4 women ten years later… and while they may be older? They’re still gleefully experimenting.

.

.

To recap:

Golden Girls in their early 50’s.

Sex and the City girls in their early 50’s.

.

.

My, how times .. not to mention the perceptions of age… change.

And if you think that was bad? Here’s some more food for thought….

.

.

Damn.

😳

  1. Golden Girls in their FIFTIES?! Did anyone ever actually buy that? Now, “And just like that”: Now that Big has taken that long stationary bike ride into the great beyond, maybe Aidan, the impossible man, can show up to make him a casket and “Comfort Carrie in her time of loss”. It’s a fairy tale. You know it, I know it, so was Game of Thrones but I didn’t allow that to deter me. (Circe Lannister, what a honey). I’m not judging, just don’t feel old. I mean, it’s inevitable to get old but becoming an old fart is completely up to you.

    1. Aidan IS returning, or so I’ve read. Game of Thrones? Da bomb! And this from a woman who doesn’t like the fantasy genre… at all. As for feeling like an old fart, my mind doesn’t but someone needs to tell my knee. It’s hobbling around like a 90 year old spinster.

      1. Sorry for the knee, dude. I’m lucky that way. My guts and the contents of my skull, not so much. Still, you have no fear of going there, even on a bum knee. SAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALOOT!

  2. Golden Girls started in 1985
    SATC started in 1998.
Golden Girls is a MARVELOUS show. Just binge watched the whole thing. SATC is wonderful too. but they are totally in different time periods of clothing and how much skin showing …..

  3. Age is only a number, I love the Golden Girls. For their age and time period they were a great comic team. I watched SATC for the first three seasons but tired of Carrie and her selfishness so I stopped watching it. I began to watch And Just Like That, then they killed Mr. Big off and I stopped watching that too. But again age, is only a number look at Helen Mirren, Demi Moore, Meryl Streep, hell look at Gwen Stefani, she’s 52 and still rocking it!

  4. The Golden Girls is still funny as hell to this day. Tara recently rewatched the whole series. Love it. But I’m curious as to the source of the 47-55 age bracket. I always thought they were purported to be in their 60s (and Sophia, as Dorothy’s mom, in her 80s).

  5. The Wilbury’s were the super group of super groups. Unfortunately Roy and George died much too soon.
If the Golden Girls were in their 50’s I’m still 39. But, really, of both shows, Sophia was the best character of all. She had reached that age of maturity she saw what was really going on, and was unafraid to tell everyone what she thought. To me, she made the SATC girls look like second-rate feminists.
Of course, my memory of both shows is spotty. And I intend on leaving it that way.

      1. Orbison started in the 50s, most of the others in the 60s, and one I think in the 70s. Three eras came together in the 80s, and they had several hits at the time. I loved them whenever.

  6. I think in the 1980’s a lot of people over 40 dressed like that. I look at photos of my Mom at my age, and dang, she did look much older than I do now, but again, the clothes, the glasses etc…

I think the Trio of SATC do look great though and never dress frumpy.
