Recycling can hurt.

I try to be a good human. I reuse, I recycle and I dispose of things the legal, environmentally friendly way.

Maine is a beautiful state and we do all we can to keep it that way, including picking up trash on the side of the road. It disgusts me the amount of crap people will throw in the woods or a ditch. Tires, construction debris, carpet, bicycles, small appliances… it’s ridiculous.

So being the good global citizens we are, we recently picked up a small window unit air conditioner, loaded it in the truck and drove to a waste management site.

Where we discovered the reason people throw things on the side of the road. If you want to encourage the public to do the right thing? I suggest making it a little more affordable.

  1. Here there is a number you call to have people come and remove the gases from such appliances before they are recycled. All for free. But actually already paid for by our taxes. Taxes are much higher in Canada but cover off a lot of things.

    1. We have these guys in pickup trucks who come by scanning the curb for such items (Toronto). They take it, either fix or dismantle it, and recycle parts or all of unusable. It’s either a business or a side hustle for them. Most are older men, maybe retired construction guys. Saves me a trip to those expensive drop-off facilities…

  2. I would like to think lower fees would make a difference, but I can’t stop thinking about all the people who can’t stop themselves from griping about any fees or taxes at all. I wonder if they like to blame trash on the roadsides on tourists. People: Gotta love ’em.

  3. Watch your electric bill. They have certain days in the spring and fall at really reduced rates. Here? A fridge is like $10 on those days. LOTS of electronics can be free.

  7. Living in the boonies, people in this area of the world seem to thing the world is a garbage dump. We try to keep the higheays clean, but the sideroads can be ugly. The dump charges for appliances and such. The nearest recycling centre is two towns and 300 kilometres away, but we do our part. Many others do not. How a fridge ends up in a ditch a kilometre away from the nearest house I will never understand. They took it that far and decided,, “what the hell, I need a beer, let’s just dump it here and go home”? I do not understand people!

      1. But at least you clean it up. That is good. Ip here wr would need a semi-trailer and six able-bodied people just to make a dent. Being in the middle of Nowhere, Alberta, there is no community will to clean our space up. It makes me cry.

      3. Yeah, but not trying to make excuses for my neighbours, the world could travel through your area, so you want to keep your “house” clean. There is little chance of 1% of 1% of the world visiting us. And our yard is so vast not even 1% of those people will leave the highway. It is only us locals who have cause to sometimes drive the back roads, so nobody cares if we run a dirty house!.
