When I first saw this, numerous movie soundtracks flitted through my mind…

They’re all filled with classic tunes that make me smile. For an iconic theme? You can’t beat John Williams’ Star Wars. But when I think about a really great soundtrack that moved me emotionally?

I have to go with Out of Africa. Particularly the hauntingly beautiful John Barry piece that accompanies the scene where Robert Redford takes Meryl Streep flying. The string section when they scatter the flamingoes in the river? I get goosebumps every time.

  2. Difficult for me to choose just one…so two:
    John Williams – E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial
    Alan Silvestri – The Avengers

    Brief story about Out Of Africa…I was exhausted after a long, long day when the wife and I went out to the theatre for the last show of the day. And of course, I fell asleep for a few minutes mid-movie…that is until she “nudged” me back to attention. 🙂

      5. Lol. I’m 50/50 on John Waters’ movies but love the man… esp after he called Applebee’s the worst restaurant in America (or something to that effect).

        Now I have a earworm of Jayne’s squeal in the song!

  11. There are so many, but the first one that comes to mind is The Lion King because I must have watched it 200 times with my son. Also The Muppet Christmas Carol because it is our holiday tradition since about 1994.

  13. Off the top of my head: “Streets of Fire”, “The Mission”, “Chariots of Fire” and “Forrest Gump”. There are many more, but I’d have to sit down and focus and, well, I’m not known for that… 😉

  14. Oh, so few Rock Greats. I can only offer one movie, the movie that my friends and I in Winnipeg saved from the garbage heap and turned into a cult classic. On first release it bombed everywhere hut Winnipeg, where we kept it going for over 3 months before it got taken away. Paul Williams “Phantom of the Paradise.” Not socially redeeming in any way, just a happening with grest music and a stupid storyline retelling of the Phsntom of tne Opera mixed with Faust. If you don’t know it you might find it dated, but if you know it you still listen to it two or three times s year. I know I still do!
    For a more cultured audience, Jonathon Livingstone Seagull, music by Neil Diamond. Awe-inspiring, just like the book. The movie? Blech!

      3. Since they hardly make movie musicals anymore, I can see why you had to go to the soundtracks of non-musicals for your list. As for me, the great movie musicals will never be passé. I could probably list dozens, if not hundreds, of the latter, but I’ll settle for the two I watched most recently (on TCM): PENNIES FROM HEAVEN and THE BOY FRIEND.

  17. SUCK, TopHat, Gay Divorcee, Paint Your Wagon, Harold and Maude, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Magnolia, Gross Pointe Blank, The Matrix, The Crow, The Wall, and something I saw recently but can’t recall. I only remember being disappointed that there is no soundtrack for sale.
