Yo, Adrian.

.

I am not, nor have I ever been… a Sylvester Stallone fan.

Rocky was cheesy.

Rambo? Please…

.

.

But since I discovered Yellowstone (and binged frantically to catch up) and since I love Yellowstone (and wanted to watch the prequels) I started streaming Paramount Plus which is where I found this –

.

.

Premise. Dwight “The General” Manfredi is a New York Mafia capo who’s just finished serving a 25-year prison sentence. Upon release, his boss sends him to Tulsa, Oklahoma, to establish criminal operations there. Not knowing anyone in the area, The General seeks a new crew to help establish his empire.

Sly is older, greying and not nearly as annoying as he was years ago. His character is out of touch, baffled by new technology, and a veritable New Yawk fish out of water in cowboy country. I hate to say it, but he plays the part to perfection.

This show is funny… he extorts the hippie owner of a weed shop for income and sleeps with a slightly disgraced ATF officer.

It’s dramatic…. Dwight is estranged from his family, loses a brother and tries to rebuild a relationship with his daughter.

And oh yeah, it’s violent. Mafia. Drugs. Gun running biker gangs. Need I say more?

For the first time in my life I’m looking toward to watching Sylvester Stallone. And if that’s not a miracle? I’ll eat kale.

  1. Well, well a recommendation from River on an interesting show to watch! I’ve already done Yellowstone, I’m on the prequel to it 1883. I just started it and I’m not sure what to think about Time McGraw and Faith Hill playing the patriarch/matriarch just yet.

      1. The title scared me a bit, just super lame. I love Stallone. He’s a humble guy who doesn’t take himself all that seriously. The show is great, with the extra juicy violence and engaging, fast pacing. Good all around.
I’m also watching Jack Ryan. Good show, I never thought I would hear Jim Halpert say “I don’t fucking believe it”.

      2. I don’t like Harrison Ford, so I missed the movies. The plot in the show is unpredictable, which means interesting to me. Tulsa King? You can see that plot coming a mile away, but it’s funny and, when the smack down cometh, it’s great to watch.

      3. TK can be predictable because the characters, especially Dwight, are so engaging. I could watch the Sopranos on a loop for that very reason. No one on Jack Ryan is anywhere near that likable, so the story has to carry the load.
Nothing gives me the warm fuzzies like a right hook from Sly.

  2. I have seen only one Sylvester Stallone movie, and most people never saw it or have no idea he was even in it. His first starring role (his name was featured with 3 other unknowns, including Henry Winkler (da Fonz). THE LORDS OF FLATBUSH. A dreary movie about 4 New York teenagers coming of age. If I had known you could ask for your money back if you did not like a movie, I surely would have on that one!
And since Yellowstone is on a streaming service, I will never see it either. I don’t like television enough to pay extra for it.

      1. I refuse. Gail watches mainly home improvement shows, and she gets enough of them on regular television. She tapes them all and watches them at her leisure. Who needs streaming.

      2. I’m not a big tv watcher, though the husband is. I have some series I DVR and watch at night. The shame of it is most of the good programming is going to the streaming services.

  3. Good I need some kale for the soup. Spoiler alert I hear that they play that yodeling country song to get both Rocky and Adrian out of Tulsa. You know the one grannie likes at the end of Mars Attacks – Indian Love Call.

  4. ” The shame of it is most of the good programming is going to the streaming services.” Why is it a shame? It is a heck of a lot cheaper than cable and you don’t have to wait weeks–if not longer to see episodes.

    1. You can have all my kale, I’ll mail it to you. 🤢
And no, I just caught up on Yellowstone so I’ll use the break until that comes back on to watch 1883 and 1923. After I finish up with Sly that is.
      😉
