Let’s play.

.

New year? Same old games…

.

.

That’s an easy one for me. The best…. or should I say most fun… car I’ve ever owned.

.

.

(Not my picture, but I don’t feel like digging through 124 albums to find one … so this is the same year, model and color)

It was 1982, I was single but dating a car guy. He had a cousin who owned a 1967 Mustang that had seen better days and been living in a garage collecting cobwebs. I saw it, fell in love with it, and my guy bought it for me.

A good bit of restoration was needed, the floor boards were pure Bondo… but after six months of weekend work she was road ready and throaty. We had a blast in that car, but a year or so later I met my husband and married him in six days. Feeling guilty for a lot of reasons, I gave the ex the car.

It was the right thing to do, but I still miss her.

How about you. What car do you wish you still had?

  1. The first car I bought, back in the 80s, and wish I still had is the Citroen 2cv also known as “ente” (duck) in German. I bought it in Germany where I worked for the US Army and sold it to a Colonel!!!

  2. I’m never sure if I’m going to get a good result, but if I did this time, that’s my first car. I took off the stock rally wheels and got a set of Cragar mags and Mickey Thompson tires. Add one Bose 1401 stereo system and all was right with the world. I bought it in Atlanta in 1981 for $3000 and put about another $1500 in it for the trip, then it was off to San Diego. Some drive. The car in the pic is being offered for $130,000, almost enough to pay off my house.

  3. 1969 Chevy Camaro, it had a 427 big block, Edlebrock manifold and double carbonators. It was fast and loud and I loved it! I also had a set of Mickey Thompson tires but my car had Centerline wheels….man I miss that car. I found a picture online close to what my car looked like but I couldn’t post the damned thing here like Kenny did his…ugh. Anyway, I love the color of your car River, very, very cool!

    1. Mine had the 428 Cobra Jet with a four-barrel Holley on a stock intake. It had hooker headers and cherry bomb glass packs, so the whole system was very free flowing and super loud. I like centerlines. There’s something strictly business about them. I really like that body style too. I think it’s the best one up until the current one. Drop a rat motor into one of those and …

      1. Oh hells yeah!! I had Hooker headers on the 69′ too although I can’t remember what muffler I had on it. It might have been a Thrush glass pack but I’m not sure. I do remember that I had a Holly double pumper carb as well. And I had a Muncie transmission, I’m telling you my car was fast. It was a hella ton of a car!

      2. Lol, no my ex-husband and I had two Camaros we’d race at the drag races every other weekend. he had a 68′ and I had the 69′. It was fun for about three years until the hobby became a bit expensive for us.

      1. As far as muscle cars are concerned, yes Ford and Chevy peeps will never agree on one good thing about the other. But, I’m a Ford car/truck person, I’ve only had Ford vehicles since I got a divorce. But I’m a Chevy muscle car girl, go figure, lol.

  4. An Austin Mini Minor that was sort of refurbished by my brother and his friend. I carried a huge screwdriver for when the gearshift came out of the floor. Also a spare battery and cables for when it needed a jump, which was daily in the winter. Plus a rubber mallet in my large purse in the winter for when the doors froze shut. The odometer didn’t work but I could fill it for $5. I had a lot of fun in that car. I drove from Nova Scotia to Maine in that car. I may still love it but I don’t really want it back. Too many memories of standing on the side of the road in the rain when it broke down.

What’s this about marrying your husband after 6 days?

    1. Curious… how big a purse did you have to carry to accommodate a rubber mallet? 🤣
Yes, I met and married my husband in 6 days. He was on holiday leave from the Marine Corps, the older brother of my best friend. 39 years later here we are.

      1. Six days…that’s a leap of faith. I met Cathy in June of 1985 and we were married the following June. That said, there was no courtship, or even a proposal. The day I met her father I notified him of my intentions and what was going to happen. It was kind of like ” I’m going to marry your daughter. Don’t worry, man, I will be your son and you are going to love me. ” He was surprised, her mom was surprised, but no one more than Cathy. For all that it would seem that I was talking absolutely zero trash. It’s great when your apparent overconfidence is justified.

  5. An easy one for me too : a 1960s Chevy Corvair Convertible, the first and ONLY new car I ever bought. I bough it when I was single, and a year or two after I married, my wife practically gave it away without my knowledge (or title) to a (supposedly) poor family, and I’ve never gotten over it….though, she being an ex-nun and not wise in the ways of the world, I eventually forgave her.

      1. I can imagine that happening with a special pre-order!
You’re making me want to drive to an auto mall and see what’s on the lots. Which made me suddenly realize how many freakin auto malls surround me! There’s also a Carvana car vending machine near me!

      2. I meant that’s the only time I’ve seen it in the past. Around 2000, a boss ordered a very specific Mercedes and it took 6+ months to arrive. The dealer also refused to sell it for cash, even though it wouldn’t be financed through them. Boss bought it on AmEx and paid off… over $60k. Must be nice.

  6. ODD man out again. I never owned a car till I was in my late 30s. No motorcycle either. I rode a bike everywhere I needed to go, or used city transit. (Or my thumb!)
My favourite bike was a silver Porche. It was sleek, smooth, and lasted for years. No idea how many miles I put on it, but lots. Kept me in excellent shape too. It was stolen one night. All I had left was the seat and the wheels; the seat was in the house and the wheels were locked to the chainlink fence. I hope the thief enjoyed it!
