Let’s play.

Because you’re already here, you might as well.

I didn’t even have to think about this one…. read.

I’ve often said I could happily live on a deserted island as long as I had a large enough stack of reading material.

Never underestimate the power of a good book to keep you company. Some of them are my best friends.

How about you…

What are you doing to stay sane in solitary?

  1. For me, there’s nothing that wouldn’t get old in that amount of time, but I guess I’d say challenging but not hair-pulling crossword puzzles. I was going to say jigsaw puzzles, but those can drive me batty at times. Books could work, but I’d somehow magically have to have a stack of books that I love. So often I get a book from the library but end up returning it early because it hasn’t kept me engaged. Hey, wait… blogs – both reading them and writing. Yeah, I could do a series about being in solitary!

  2. Much the same as you, books would keep me sane!

I have left several comments on your blog lately, Rivergirl – and they seem to have vanished into the blogosphere. I wonder if I have been banished by the internet gods to spam jail or something???

It may be that this one won’t make it to your blog either, but I will keep trying.

  3. No question about it, reading it is. If I was limited to only a few books, I would have my Bible (King James Version), the world’s best Bible concordance (I don’t know which one that is) and a huge Bible dictionary. There is every type of story imaginable in the Bible.

I was in the hospital for four weeks last fall. All I had to read was my Bible and my e-reader. I recommend e-readers for situations like that, when you can’t physically have print books. I mostly read my Bible, but did read that horrible book by Hillary Clinton and Louise Penny.

My doctor mostly talked to me about books. He asked me for a list of five books related to my interest in history and he gave me a list of five, of his favourites. I have kept his list (where else?) in the back of my Bible.

If I could have extra books, I’d have The Iliad and The Odyessey, both translated by Robert Fitzgerald.

  4. Nothing, apparently after 28 days you will go insane. I once did a digital art progression of madness. Imagine being the innocent guy that spent 55 years in solitary.
