As I said yesterday, our master bedroom will be getting new windows and a new exterior door this week. But of course nothing is ever simple at Casa River.
We ordered the windows at the beginning of July and have waited (none too patiently) until now for them to arrive. We did not however special order a door since we just needed something basic and everyone has those in stock.
.

.
This is the weird set up of the back of our house. Two doors in a corner opening to the deck. The right goes to the living room, the left to the master bedroom.
.

.
We replaced the right door 10 years ago and though that already needs another replacement… the bedroom is going first for good reason.
.

.
Rotting wood, warped frame and general ugliness.
When the husband and I ran over to Lowes yesterday to buy a replacement we were thinking along these lines. Not dark brown, but with a little window on the top.
.

.
So I measured the door’s width and off we went.
Only to get there and realize doors are not a standard size and I hadn’t measured the height. Another round trip home and back to the store with a 32×78 result.
.

.
(Yes, it’s a stinky little door because the idiot designers of this house stuck it in between the bathroom and walk in closet.)
Measurements in hand we were ready to buy a door… or so we thought.
Did you know in order to measure for a replacement door you have to pop the trim off to measure the rough opening height, width and depth? We didn’t.
The other issue…. none of the pretty doors with fancy windows on top are available in a 32 width.
So… I’ll wait for our contractor to pry the trim off, measure correctly and decide if it’s worth the hassle and cost of enlarging the opening just to have a pretty window on top.
I’m guessing not.
🥴
.
Would trimming the door also be an option (says she who knows nothing about these things)?

Trimming… how?

Sounds like the door is too big for the doorway. Rather than opening the doorway, maybe trim the door to size? Or did I read that wrong?

That would be a crazy amount of extra work as the entire frame is being replaced as well.

No worries. I learn it all as it happens…

Your remodel posts have inspired me to get my behind in gear and start on my DIY remodel list. I have to replace two of the three exterior doors on my home. So now I know how to measure them before I buy. I also need to replace ALL my windows, I have 14 windows 😫.

We replaced 16 windows about 8 years ago. Sad thing is these 5 cost almost as much as those. It’s crazy.
We have two (three?) other doors to replace after this one. This house needs so many updates I fear I’ll die before they’re finished.

i would try to match the other door, but i think your contractor will let you know the best possible solutions for the inside space. good luck!!!

The door to the right? I would, but it goes to the bedroom and I really don’t want full panel open glass there.

I’m just thinking of others. Seeing post menopausal me on the way to the shower could scar someone for life.

“Did you know in order to measure for a replacement door you have to pop the trim off to measure the rough opening height, width and depth?” Yes. I also know that once you get into buying doors with cute little windows in them the cost goes up dramatically. Doors are no easy thing.

They are not.
I know this now…. and it does not bode well for the other 3 that need replacing.

I’m sorry.

I had the exact same issue! That’s how I learned the prev owner put an internal door on an external location. Whoever I hired got me a very nice white external door with 6 small square windows on top… for a very good price.
I hope yours works out as well as mine did!!

Our existing door is exterior, it’s just a weird smaller size, and with the interior configuration there’s no wiggle room to expand.
🙁

What a weird layout to have two doors parallel

It might be less awful if it was balanced by windows on the other side, but that’s a long walk in closet.

Ah, I see now. My Toulouse doors post, while entirely innocent, was very poorly timed, and when you were probably still grumpy from repeated trips to Loews. Are there any local caves you can move into? Methinks it would be easier…

Not that I know of, but I may have to put out some feelers.

We keep living in fakakta places where everything has/had to be custom made.

Oh, for standard sizes. Life would be so much easier… and cheaper.

Why does everything have to be so darn complicated? I’m hoping you can find an easy resolve AND get your pretty door with the light on top.

I should be used to it by now. Nothing ever goes smoothly here…

Do you need the door? Why not replace it with a nice window or remove it all together. Of course then you need to match siding. Everything has a domino effect on both the amount of work and the budget.

The way this house is designed, we need it… as it’s the only exit on that end. Otherwise, if the place catches fire? We’d have to run down a hallway.. turn right, run down another hallway, turn left and sprint to the front door to get out.

We may have great windows, but the front door will need replacing soon. Now I’m nervous.

We have four doors to replace in total, this is only the first. It does not bode well…

You may very well find out in the long run it is better to go with a standard size door, or at least that is what we ran into here in Az.

I’ve learned there’s no such thing. And the problem is this door is wedged in between a bathroom and a walk in closet so there’s no room for expansion.

I noticed. Looks like someone put an addition on without getting permits, we have the same thing. Was really fun when we found out the washer in the apt. the pipe was literally just dropped in the wall, luckily hubby noticed it LOL GL
