Furniture? Check.

Fabric pattern for chair, ottoman and pillows ? A possible check.

Flooring? Check.

Solid fabric for sofas? A box we can’t seem to check.

An interior designer I spoke with said I was going about this all wrong because a room should be built around the rug. Not willing to start over but interested to see if finding the perfect rug could help…

I grabbed a girlfriend and shopped.

It was not at all helpful.

I wanted to draw in some more color. Do you see much color in the showroom above?

Yes, some of them blended with the fabrics.

Some of them quite nicely.

But they were just an extension of the same palette.

And while I liked a few of them …

Nothing screamed take me home.

So solid fabric searching continued.

Having such a terrible time with that blue pattern I tentatively chose another.

Two blues, yes. But at least there’s rust, burgundy brown and cream mixed in.

  4. Ah, fashion is terrible, one year Orange is in, so are maxi dresses, but you look terrible in orange and maxi dresses. The year your colour turquoise and 40s chic are in you don’t have any money or reason to buy a dress…. Maybe sit in the loungeroom and look around you at all the items in the room, what’s a theme? Colours? Metals? And for some reason I’m thinking of quiltwork.

    1. I’ve never been one for trends. I wear what
      I think looks good on me, not some anorexic runway model. Same goes for our home. When I wanted a white and blue/grey kitchen ten years ago everything was green and beige. Now that I want green, I can’t find it anywhere.

  5. You’re supposed to build it around your rug? Seriously? In 5th grade I wanted to be an interior designer. Good thing that didn’t happen – I’d be doing it all wrong. Our only living room rug is a half moon-shaped hearth rug that we literally just threw out because it’s old and the bunny can’t seem to stop herself from chewing it. So, as a rugless person, I guess I’m free to decorate however I want. Yippee!

  6. I disagree with your interior designer. We brought our furniture with us from the old house (the furniture was only a couple of years old). The two houses were completely different styles, and the old house was carpeted while the new house was hardwood, requiring area rugs. The new house has a combined living room/dining room. I had absolutely no problems finding large area rugs to pull together the colors and designs of the furniture in both areas of the entire room. I would have hated to try to do it the other way around.
