You know how they say war is Hell? While I’m sure that’s true, I’d like to add an addendum…
Custom made windows are the absolute bottom, flame filled, covered in kale and cilantro, merciless pit of no return, bad hair day Hell.
After waiting a month and half with two faulty windows already installed, and after having two separate store rep / window experts make home visits to tell us the windows were indeed faulty, we went to the store from which they were purchased to seek satisfaction yesterday.
(Please keep in mind both supposed experts suggested we get a refund.)
Our plan was to shop for a similar high grade window made by a different company. After explaining our problem, a nice salesgirl helped us start looking and things were going well until we were interrupted by the manager.
It went downhill from there. And it went downhill very quickly.
Ice covered mountain road with bald tires slathered in butter kind of quickly.
We introduced ourselves politely, stated our issue succinctly and got absolutely nowhere. After a long discussion about quality control at the manufacturing level (it’s non existent), and a longer discussion about expecting to get what you pay for (that was us) we were told –
1. No refund would be forthcoming because it was a special order.
And –
2. I’m quoting here, “Nothing is perfect.”
.

.
To say we were stunned is an understatement.
To say my husband was ready to explode is right on the mark.
Oh, the manager said if the report filed by the second store rep expert came back showing faulty construction they would replace the off square sashes, but chuckle chuckle, hey…. they might be off square as well.
What the utter f*ck?
Are we supposed to pay over $5,500 and shrug our shoulders at defective merchandise? Apparently so.
My husband didn’t punch the manager. He didn’t even curse him out which I felt like doing repeatedly, but he did threaten to get a lawyer as we walked out.
Here’s the problem with that… technically we did not purchase the windows. Our contractor did… for us. So by the letter of the law the store doesn’t owe us anything. I’m having a hard time making my angry as all get out husband understand that, but that’s where we are.
We spoke with our contractor after this fiasco and he will be going to the store as soon as he can to fight for a refund on our behalf. To be honest I don’t see it happening.
But I’ll keep you posted.

O M G! There’s got to be a good/better outcome. Sue them!

We can’t. Technically we didn’t buy them..

But you can help your contactor fight them.

Yes. We can do that…. but he does a lot of business with them and has a large account there so I’m not sure where he stands on threatening a lawsuit.

I can’t see how this saga can get any worse. At this point, I would contact the Attorney General’s office – this is ridiculous.

If I were you, I’d report this to the Better Business Bureau….if for no other reason than registering a complaint against the company will warn those (like me) who check with the BBB before making a major purchase.

When this is all over I’m going to flood social media with bad reviews. BBB is a good idea as well.

I can only offer my outrage in support – having done a reno which needed custom everything – and it being a total pleasure – I have a different kind of empathy. I am angry and sad for you.

A pleasurable custom renovation? I didn’t even think that was possible…

Nope you won’t be laughing. Even ten years down the road when the memory hits, you will still want to rant. I know this from experience. Hope your contractor can make some headway.

Well that’s discouraging. I need to laugh…

The manager’s argument that nothing’s perfect doesn’t hold water because people install new windows ALL THE TIME. Otherwise, they wouldn’t be selling them. They don’t fit because they didn’t build the windows according to the exacting measurements they were given. They’re at fault. You had the examiner come out and tell you this as required. Right? You have that documentation? They need to remedy this. Continue to document everything, especially the ass-clown who thinks he’s a manager. Also, I’m not sure I’m buying the whole you didn’t technically buy the windows argument. It doesn’t matter who ordered them at the store, it came out of your pocket and it was for your home. You bought them. Again, people do this all of the time and not every customer gets into this situation with this kind of idiocy. If you decided to change the dimensions of your windows by half a foot and didn’t want the ones you originally ordered because you wanted larger or smaller windows, that’s when “we don’t do refunds” applies. When they don’t build the windows to the specifications they were given, “no refunds” does not apply. You were given a faulty product. You need to go above the manager’s head. This store or manufacturer is operating in bad faith. I would use that language. I would consult an attorney (one who won’t charge you for initial consultation), then go from there. Also, it doesn’t hurt to get your local news involved. This business is operating in your town and people need to be aware of what kind of stupid they’re going to be doing business with if they buy special order windows through them. Do they really want that kind of bad publicity? Good luck to you. Mona

Apparently windows are like car parts, they’re built to specifications with “allowances”. Our levels are ‘acceptably off’ and can be made right with adjustments. So they say….

What a ridiculous mess for you. I know we had trouble getting our new windows, but nothing like this. I’m sorry. If sales people would *play nice* with customers life would go better for all of us, but some people like this manager just can’t do that.

And here’s something we were told when our windows came in mis-measured: it was no big deal for the window company because they’d donate our wrong ones to Habitat for Humanity Resale Store and the company would take a tax write-off. This makes me suspicious of what your manager guy is up to…

Problem is, ours weren’t mismeasured. And we’re not dealing with the window company…. yet, just the middleman at the building supply store. It’s maddening.

The only way you’ll laugh is if the store burns down.
