Tear down of the front porch is complete…

And this is the composite decking color I chose.

It’s called Rocky Harbor, clay toned with a little grey. I thought this would be the next step in the replacement process but my husband had other ideas.
See the wall behind the porch with 3 windows and a door?

Husband will have to remove some of the lower siding and since he can’t find an exact color match he decided he wants to change it….
So he came home with this.

It gives the look of stone without the hassle or high price.

He chose the Santa Fe color, which admittedly looked pretty good… and brought home a sample.

Which looked anything but good in real life.
Cheap, plastic-y and not convincing anyone it was stone… it looked like the skirting they put under trailers in the 70’s.
And since my motto is if you’re going to do something you might as well do it right….

I took my husband to the store to look at actual stone. He wasn’t thrilled as it’s a lot more expensive and much harder to work with…. but since it was his idea to replace the old siding (instead of carefully removing it and putting it back on) he couldn’t really argue.

I brought these two samples home.
There are going to be issues. Three windows and a door to cut around. Depth discrepancies. And the conundrum of how to marry corners- one edge stone and one edge vinyl siding.
No one seems to be able to answer our questions but the lumber store is having a trade show with the stone distributors soon, so we’ll attend and hopefully learn how to install stone properly.
Wish us luck.
I have a feeling we’ll need it.
🥴

That is going to be an interesting project. I’ve seen the material at the siding distributor I used. Good luck. I’ll be following with great interest.

I’m hopeful, but this is my husband we’re talking about. He’ll take shortcuts and something will go horribly wrong…

This works with my twenty feet up a ladder comment. Let it get complicated. Let it get so complicated he’ll be ready for a Rivergirl sized vacation when it’s done.

Sounds like a good idea, but remember I have to live with the fruits of his labor.

It can’t be worse than the fake brick wall my dad put in our kitchen when I was young. It was three dimensional but very thin plastic. If you leaned back in your chair against the wall (which was strictly forbidden), it cracked. Pieces soon fell out and we could see the old wallpaper underneath.

That’s what this reminds me of!

This stacked stone look is becoming popular around here. It’s pretty but no doubt adds a new variable into choosing your flooring, not to mention a roof when the time comes. I wish you well, having wrestled with many exterior color decisions here a Chez Bean. And won, I might add.

So – you are going to replace ALL the siding on that side of the house? Then it won’t match the rest of the house and all the siding will have to be replaced to match? I feel like I’m missing something here…

No, we’re just doing an accent wall of stone behind the porch.

Oh my gosh!
Delete, delete, delete! Convinced him to work with the siding that will be so much easier!
Although I do like the look of stone…

The plastic fake stone is awful. I just can’t…

Just when I thought Mr. River was batting a thousand, his stats go right down the can, lol. Why, why, why would he want to do this?! It’s easier for him to just replace the siding with actual SIDING. But what can I say, it’s not like he hasn’t pulled this before. And of course that’s when you prove him wrong, lol.

The existing siding on the house is old and faded. We couldn’t find a color anywhere near a match to replace what he ripped off. It’s either stone… or a patchwork quilt of vinyl.

Or replace the vinyl siding and paint the entire house. Which ever seems to be the most cost effective way.

Oh, hell no. That’s way more work and expense. This is Maine, you have to paint every few years.

Tear down of the front purchase is complete.
How fitting that you wrote “purchase” instead of “porch.” $$$$$

There are so many fake flooring materials that look like the real thing. Looks like they’re just not there yet with fake stone exteriors though. I can’t wait to see how it looks in the end!
