I admit I was unfamiliar with Maine’s oldest business and had to look it up.
.

.
Can’t say I was overly impressed with the accommodations….
.

.
But I dare you to find an older business that’s still run by the same family.
John Gooch, the first settler in the Cape Neddick area, arrived in the area 1637. At some point, he established the Inn, and, by 1667, he was commissioned by Ferdinando Gorges, an agent of King Charles II, to “reside on the ocean-front peninsula at the mouth of the Kennebunk River and ferry travellers across the River.”|2](31|41 The inn has been in continuous operation by the Gooch family since its inception. In 2018, it remained owned by John Gooch’s twelfth-generation descendants.
Damn.
1667?
Beat that!
.

.
Interesting how that breaks down regionally. Wonder why…
.

.
Mainers.
We’re moderately happy.
.

.
Yankee, and proud of it.
.

.
None.
I’m proud of that too.

Weird maps.
They’re my jam.
But hopefully not the toe variety…

Happy to be “gross” and more than 50% happy.

That’s why they’re wearing shoes on our state flag.
The brewery that is the oldest business in WI has only had its current owners for 20 years. It used to have a lot of labels but only a few beers. I used to play soccer with a group of German expats. They drank one of those beers, saying it was the nearest thing to German beer you could find in the US. The secret they didn’t know is that the same beer (Augsburger) was also sold as Rhinelander. Under that name it came in returnable bottles at a lower price.
I wonder what the reverse of the Texas map would look like. (How the rest of the US views Texas.)

I know how we view Texas, but it’s not fit for polite conversation…

What’s with all the happy people in Utah? It’s cheap to live there but try getting a decent cuppa or libation!!!

Happy sober uncaffeinated people?
How is that possible…

I answered Ally on why Utah. You can get coffee and drinks in Park City and SLC — plus surprise of surprises — the best lobster rolls in the country at Freshies. They won nationwide honors many years in a row!

I’m not a coffee drinker so I can’t speak to that. But best lobster roll? I’m a Mainer… that, I will argue.

I know you’re a Mainer is why I brought it up 😉They fly lobster in daily. You can look at their website to see their awards. Maybe it’s a small competition? You’ll have to let me know.

I’m interested to know where they get their lobster. They say Maine, but nothing more specific. It’s also cooked here then shipped the next day…. so technically it’s not fresh by the time it gets to Utah. I know I’m being picky, but we take our lobstah seriously up here.

I just read the Freshies Website and they won a contest for best lobster roll in Maine, which blew everyone away there. It turns out the husband is from Maine and the wife from NH.

Okay.
That explains it.

I’ve been to the happiest state and the least happiest. I feel like I may have seen the best and worst of people. As for happy people in Utah, I agree it’s odd but maybe they have to say they’re happy. Part of the Mormon faith?

I get Utah because my daughter went to the University of Utah. It’s a gorgeous state. I’d say people are happy there because of the mountains, hiking, skiing — all the outdoorsy stuff they do. I’ve never been in a city with so much pride as SLC. The gymnastics team broke all college records for attendance of a women’s sport, plus football, basketball etc, are always packed. I understand why Hawaii beats Utah. They’re outside all the time, too enjoying their beauty.

There are a few National Parks in Utah I’d love to see….

Me too. I’d fly in and out of SLC to visit our daughter and go to her swim meets. We weren’t by the parks. When we drove, it was 10 hours and we didn’t stop. They’re on my bucket list!

I’ve never been to Utah, so I don’t really know.
Perhaps it’s the holy underwear…

The Mormon Church takes care of its own – it’s a real nanny state. But then my relatives live in rural Utah – far from Park City.

We aren’t Mormon and the University of Utah is not BYU. There were a lot of mormons on campus, but they are not the majority. My daughter’s swim team was international. She had swimmers and divers from Norway, UK, Australia, Mexico and South America. So it was a really diverse group.

Just so you know, that map of how Texas views the rest of the country is purely from the view of those in Northeast Texas. Those of us who live in far west Texas aren’t even considered Texas and we are just as outcast from the rest of the state. As a former brain fart Governor, Rick Perry once said, isn’t El Paso apart of Mexico? What an idiot, but then again the far right, conservative views of our state government have never been accused of being smart, lol. That’s probably why we’re not a happy state n the other map either.
