I’m sorry to hear that.

He was literally spit on and called a baby killer when he stepped off the plane.
I’m thankful we’ve learned to blame the policy not the servicemen.

It choked me up right away. But I’m a sucker for old vets…

The irony is that many who didn’t serve and fail to grasp and respect the sacrifice have no clue that their freedom to be an *sshole about it is derived in no small part from that very sacrifice…

Exactly.

Old vets choke you up? You ought to see me at the VA. If I don’t keep my head on a swivel it could get embarrassing.
An irredeemable debt of gratitude to all of my fellow vets,, all the way back to the beginning, so many of whom endured hardships I never had to face.
I just hope it doesn’t wind up being for nothing.

It can’t.
We won’t let it…

There is this sign as you enter James A. Haley VA Hospital that, to me, says a lot. I hope they have this sign at every VA Hospital…VFW Post…American Legion Post….DAV Post….
“The Price of Freedom can be seen here.”
I have adopted all my fellow Vets as my sisters and brothers.

If that sign isn’t at all those places, it should be.

That’s a great point about 1968. I’ve almost forgotten how they were treated.

I’m sorry that anti-Vietnam protests got personal on your husband’s return – that’s deplorable. Speaking as someone who would have signed up for the RAF if they’d allowed women to fly when I was young, I wonder how many people are motivated by “serving their country” as opposed to getting a bit of fun and excitement? (that would have been my motivation!)

In my husband’s Vietnamese era, no one was enlisting for fun and excitement.

Of course… I guess he was drafted, rather than enlisting? If he did enlist, I would be interested to know what was going through his mind at the time

No, he enlisted. His country was at war, he thought it was the right thing to do.

What a beautiful video. I love that guy’s face when Obama showed up. Priceless.
Endless thanks to your husband and all who served. It’s a tragedy how they were treated.

I showed the video to my husband, he choked up and said he wished he was on that plane.
Even after all these years… it hurts.

This makes me miss Obama even more.
And thank your husband for his service on my behalf, would you? Just tell him I’m…umm…a crusty old lobsterman who crossed paths with you once up Stonington way.
