Let’s play.

.

Don’t argue.

Just play…

.

.

Two things immediately come to mind.

First… read a book. The old fashioned bound paper variety. As much as I love my tech, I despise Kindles and their ilk. I’m a tactile reader and love nothing more than opening a newly printed book.

Second… I pay my bills by check, through the mail. No automatic withdrawals linked to my bank account, no monthly debits on my card. We’ve been hacked too many times for me to voluntarily give my info to every company we pay for services. It may be slower, but it also helps the struggling USPS… because when that goes under we’re all in trouble

How about you…

What do you still do the old fashioned way?

  1. Like you i prefer to read solid books/magazines (although Magazines & Comics these days are ridiculously overpriced), i pay my rent (so my wife can pay half each)/water sewer with a check. I almost NEVER rely on digital tools to make my art. Everything is drawn/painted/contructed by hand using actual materials. I miss having access to using film cameras. But that has become expensive even if I go the updated Polaroid Route.

      1. Neither conceptual art, ART. like a banana thumbtacked to a wall to reflect starvation or even more so…when some artist chained a dog in a museum with no food or water and called Starving Dog to reflect the hunger in the world…that is not art thst is animal cruelty. Or the American Photographer who ventured into Mexico and rearranged corspes and heads of victims of the Cartel to express the horror of it all.

  2. I’ve been known to clean things, aside from teeth, with a toothbrush. I don’t know how old fashioned that is. I used to be very critical of e-readers until I no longer had access to a library, in many ways I prefer them because when I come across a new word I can easily instantly look it up. Write a check? Oh how I hate that! I love eft! I’ve been using it since it became available – close to 20 years ago(?) I worked as a “do everything and anything” for a small consulting firm who used an outside bookkeeper and the bills were always paid late. I had already started using on-line banking myself and when I suggested that to my boss she was amazed and the bills started getting paid on time, by me. Exit one bookkeeper.

    1. I can see how businesses would like automatic on time payments, but it’s just not for me. I pay our bills the day they arrive and post a check the next day. To each their own. I do see the convenience, just hate the idea of all those companies having my account numbers.

      1. Auto-payments go on a cash back credit card. Yes, using a credit card can be risky but we all use them. All other payments are done by me manually via my bank’s (actually a credit union) web site, payments are done via eft transfer. So whoever I am paying does NOT have access to my bank account . I would never have direct debit from my checking account (aside from my mortgage which is with the same bank) and would never use a debit card. I do have direct deposits for all of our income tho. Nothing is totally secure – around here mailboxes are regularly robbed and checks are “white washed” and re-written – checks have even been stolen from INSIDE post offices. Plus, of course, the Post Office is inefficient as hell – mail is ‘lost’ on a regular basis and it can take over a week to get mail delivered one state over. I do not trust the post office.

      2. There’s no easy or right way anymore. No matter how careful we are, I still get letters from companies saying they had a data breach and we might be compromised. You can’t win these days…

    1. I don’t have a rice cooker either, though I gave up cranking my car windows when 8 track tapes died. As for elephants, I’ve found a well placed poison blow dart works just as well. Just don’t sneeze when hunting..

  3. I’m with you on both of your preferences. A third preference is banking the old fashioned way — I don’t use ATM and ain’t even sure what the initials stand for (though I’m guessing Automatic Teller Machine).

  4. Coffee sans Keurig cups. I make two cups a day. And do not contribute two little plastic cups to the world trash supply. The coffee grounds go into the compost and into the garden. Cleaner world and better garden. It may be a very small step yet one I much prefer.

  5. Verify my checking account balance: I balance the checkbook every month. The husband thinks I’m crazy, but I know my brother (who has an MBA) also does this. However, we might be the only two people left on Earth who do this, so if any of your other readers do, I hope they respond to this comment. Anal retentiveness loves company.

  6. Ditto your two answers plus I like to peruse a real paper catalogue from any company I might want to order something from. I’ll doublecheck online of course, but nothing like holding possibilities in my hand.

  7. Give me a second to explain, but I wish I could still breathe and eat the old fashioned ways.
For the past two springs and summers, at least, and I can’t say yet about this coming fall and winter, i have been breathing wildfire smoke with every breath that I take. Sometimes it is so thick I have o put on my old N95 Covid mask because I can feel the smoke particles go down into my lungs. That cannot be healthy. I survived being a smoker for 20 years, but I don’t know that I can survive wildfire smoke.
As for eating, my food didn’t use to last as long in the fridge as it now does. If you didn’t eat it in a day or two it went bad. Now I can leave food in my fridge for weeks and it is still edible. But do I really want to eat all the chemicals they use to preserve the freshness of foods these days? It makes me wonder what that food is doing to my body. For me it really doesn’t matter anymore, something is going to kill me. And that is the attitude I once had about smoking tobacco, I thought I wss choosing my road to death. And then I saw some relatives dying of lung cancer, abd I quit smoking that day! It was a sobering sight, and it affected me way more than I thought it could. I have now been alive longer than the number of years I smoked, with no ill affects so far. My lungs were clean at the time of my last chest x-ray. But my bowels are a disaster area, possibly from eating too many chemical preservatives my whole life. And they are everywhere now, in everything!
Nope, these were the first things I thought of when I read the game rules and I tried to think of normal activities, but these are the ones I have been wondering about for awhile now. I couldn’t “not write” about them. Sorry if I ruined the mood.

    1. Ah, chemical free food. I remember that fondly. Our bodies pay the price for kitchen convenience that’s for sure.
Sorry about the wildfire smoke. I can’t even imagine breathing that everyday…

      1. For myself I don’t worry about it, I have lived a good happy life long enough. But what of the children, their parents, and young adults. all who still have most of their lives ahead of them? How will their lives be affected?

  8. First of all I found it weird that I didn’t get a notification about your Friday “Lets Play” post. So I had to hunt it down.
I’m like you I like to read a lot and have a strong dislike of any Kindle type of device. I also go shopping in person, none of this ordering online and having it delivered to my home. My son does this and I’m just like nope, not going to do it because I want to see the brands and prices of what I buy.

    1. Not getting my notifications? How horrible…. let’s hope that nightmare is over. 😉
I’m a tactile shopper as well. And while I admit to buying way more books than I should on Amazon when it comes to clothes, shoes, towels, comforters, jewelry, housewares etc I have to see and feel it firsthand. Been burned too many times on something that seemed like great quality on line but wasn’t.

  9. I much prefer having a book in hand than a Kindle. We have several kitchen gizmos meant to make cooking easier but I enjoy chopping veggies the old fashioned way. I also hang my clothes out on the line instead of using the dryer!

    1. I don’t own a food processor. My friends are all stunned.. but give me a good sharp knife and I’m fine.
I used to hang clothes on the line for years but admit I do it less and less now. Freshly air dried sheets are a must in good weather though!
