.
It started with our contractor being 3 hours late. Not a big deal in the scheme of things, but he was pissed because the windows we ordered were supposed to be delivered for free the day before and weren’t. This meant he had to empty his trailer and go get them himself which cost him… thankfully not us … 3 hours of work time.
By early afternoon, we had a hole in the bedroom where the old window was removed.
.

.
The hole of which I had to make sure Lord Dudley Mountcatten was unaware, lest he take a flying leap to freedom.
.

.
According to our contractor the old windows were installed incorrectly without the proper tape, sealants and secure flanges which would explain the leakage and rotted wood.
.

.
Properly taped, the new window was installed.
.

.
Mind you, we didn’t cheap out here and ordered some pretty expensive Marvin replacements. I expected them to be awesome.
The first one wasn’t.
.

.
Though everything was level, flush and plumb with the frame, the bottom part of the window not only had a scratch in the glass but showed gaps to the outside on either side.
.

.
And while I enjoy looking out the window? I don’t want to be able to stick things out the window.
Clearly something was wrong.
Of course it was… because no project ever goes smoothly at Casa River.
The poor contractor spent all afternoon taking it in and out thinking it was his fault, but it doesn’t seem to be. A manufacturing error… on our custom made expensive as shit window?
Grr…
And because we needed more bad news? Even if the contractor manages to solve the gap problem, our existing sill and trim don’t line up now and will all have to be replaced. Which will be true for the other four as well.
More work. More expense.
Why is nothing ever easy?
😩
.
Unlike. Because it just isn’t 😔

Two thumbs down for sure.

If they are custom made windows then doesn’t the correction go back on the manufacturer to fix? We had to have custom windows on that stupid house in Philly ( to replace the brand new contractor grade windows) and the company made and installed the windows. One thing you gotta say about Philly is the level of craftsmen is superb.

Yes, if the window itself is flawed. Our contractor just wants to make sure it’s nothing he’s done.

Well, this home remodel keeps getting more interesting. Maybe the old windows didn’t fit either, which would explain the new ones not fitting. The previous owner may have just “made” them fit. I’m realizing that with my house. The previous owner did a lot of shifty DIY because he was a cheap ass. I know this because I actually know the previous owner of my house. Only I didn’t find out until I closed on the house and saw his name on the paperwork. So, I’m fixing what I can on my own and finding some infuriating “quick fixes” he attempted….🤬.

Interesting isn’t the word I’m using to describe our remodeling journey.
It’s not even close. 🥴
The old windows were put in when that room when added on so I doubt that’s the case. Although the builder clearly sucked…

(Eastern European accent) It is for to laugh. At least you didn’t have a lot of unrealistic expectations, or maybe you did.

I wouldn’t call airtight windows unrealistic… but clearly I set the bar too high.

Just once I’d like something to go smoothly. That’s not too much to ask, is it?

I am sorry to hear this. It’s bad enough to have problems with cheap windows from a window box store, but to have them on custom windows is not good.

Not good at all.

If it were easy, you’d have nothing to blog about!

He is not. I take him outside for walks, on a leash…. but he’s a very skittish boy and is scared of everything but us.

Plus, I’d imagine you don’t want him eaten by a moose…

We’re too far south for moose, but we did have a bear in the backyard one year….

Yep, we had the same story a few years ago. Ordered 10 custom windows from Pella and long story short, the guy who measured for them made did it wrong. And the waiting game continued.
Good luck.

That’s what I’m afraid of.

When we converted our 3-season porch to a mudroom, one of the guys drilled holes for the door pull handles in the wrong spot in every single door (13 of them) and they all had to be reordered. Construction sucks!!!

Wow, that was a complete bonehead move.
It’s the delays that drive me nuts. I won’t buy new furniture until we replace the flooring, and I won’t replace the flooring until the windows and door have been finished. Ugh.

Our problem occurred during COVID, so getting replacement doors took forever, extending our already long project by weeks and even months. Glad it’s all over.

We ordered these windows in July, it’s mid October now. If we have to wait another three months that’s mid January. Not prime weather for window replacement in Maine.

Eh, windows are overrated anyway. Doors are where the real action is!
Oh, wait…you’re replacing those, too…

If we want to replace it? It WILL be out of whack…
