Let’s Play….

.

Because my vacation series is finally over.

.

.

I have to be honest and say this question stumped me. While I know most children cycle through dreams of being a fireman or an astronaut or an actress or a professional sports star… I can’t remember ever wanting to be anything.

I loved dinosaurs when I was a kid… ( still do) but I never dreamt of being a paleontologist.

.

.

I loved taking pictures as a kid… (still do) but never dreamt of being a photographer.

.

.

I loved to read as a kid… (still do) but never dreamt of being an editor.

.

.

I guess I never set myself for up disappointment by dreaming of a career. I’ve had multiple jobs in my life, but I married young and thankfully never had to work.

How about you?

What did your childhood self dream of being…

.

  1. As a kid I wanted to be a mailman or a toll worker, because of my fascination with people. One of those jobs is extinct at least in Pa the other is on the verge.

    1. I can honestly say you’re the only person I’ve ever heard who wanted to be a toll person. That’s constantly ranked the absolutely worst job to have.
And the poor post office. I still support it and mail my bills, but you’re right it will soon be gone.

  2. I can remember one time I wanted to work down the pit. I am very surprised that I wanted to do that considering I didn’t like to be in enclosed spaces.

The other was to earn money from my drawings or be a pet sitter.

  3. I wanted to be an interior designer, then my fourth grade teacher, who was a huge alcoholic and came to work drunk, told me I’d never do that. I didn’t realize he’d some to work drunk and drink AT work until parent/teacher night and some parents were questioning his sobriety and saw him slur his words. Which was how he’d teach the class. His exact words were…..”Yeah, not in this town kid.” So, I stopped dreaming of being an interior designer. Now I work with NASA, so suck it Mr. Escarciga!!!

    1. Fuckin’ A, V! I’ll bet your house is tasteful and stylish anyway. I went to school for interior design because straight guys want a cool place to live too. The instructors all worked selling office furniture so they weren’t much help. I learned more from Architectural digest and Metropolitan Home. All good, no problem.

      1. NO EFFIN WAY! Lol….well tasteful and stylish not quite there yet. I’m working on my house one room at a time because, you know…money, lol. And because I bought a great house with a lot of outdated issues going on. It will get there, a little at a time. And just like you, I get inspiration from books and magazines which is more accessible online now. Easy peasy!

      2. I’m thinking about posting up a tour of my humble abode. It’s old and has a multitude of problems but it’s still pretty cool. Except for my room, which is mostly stuck in the seventies.

  4. I wanted to be a fighter pilot after watching movies like Battle of Britain and Angels one five. It was exciting and romantic and I had nerves of steel to go with my endless supply of jokes. I also hadn’t considered what a round of 20mm would do to my part. I was too late to spark up any Messerschmitts, but when my dad took me to see the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt, (CVA-42), I didn’t want to be a pilot anymore. I wanted to land a jet on the deck of a ship and be an AVIATOR. Too bad about the A-10, it’s a sweet ride with a whole different vibe but, God bless ’em, the Air Force and I just weren’t meant to be.

  5. I also thought this world was a pretty cruel place and so I wanted to get in a space ship and find a better place! I’m an artist and a writer and to make either into a career takes much thicker skin than I have – which is okay – I enjoy creating other worlds even if just for myself.

  6. When I was at Primary school, all the lollipop (road crossing) men and women were of retirement age

I can remember telling my parents that was what I was going to be when I grew up – because I wouldn’t have to start work till I was 65.

  7. A sportscaster…but as it turns out I haven’t been a big travel guy through life and that job obviously can take you from one city to the next to the next…and I would probably have gotten road-weary very quickly.

  8. I’m the same as you, I never had an image or plan other than wanting to go to university but never knew what I’d want to study. I’m not sure we know ourselves well enough to make that decision until later. So many of us just leave school and get a job to earn to live rather than thrive. I’m not suited to office artifice but worked in corporate administration. Now I’m finally going to uni, but at my age I think I have to make my own job
