.
This is a front section of our home.
.

.
It has a ridiculous, utterly useless front porch.
.

.
Purely for decorative purposes…
It’s old.
.

.
The wood is rotted..
.

.
The railing is out dated..
.

.
And as you can see…
.

.
The posts have sunken and hold up exactly nothing.
The previous owner, who instead of fixing it just added little filler squares of wood and caulked, left us with a mess. Thankfully the posts are not load bearing.
Which wasn’t the case when we torn down the kitchen porch a decade ago… as evidenced by this FB memory that popped up the other day.
.

.
Clearly we like to live dangerously at Casa River.
.

.
But back to the ridiculously small front porch.
It was next on the list for our contractor… tear down, dress up and replace. Except now the contractor is too busy with other jobs and doesn’t know when he’ll be able to get to it.
.

.
So you know who has decided he’ll replace it.
Yes.
My husband, king of the jerry rigged construction projects said, “No problem.” which we all know is a lie. It will be a big problem from start to finish because I want a decent front porch, small and useless as it might be.
Stay tuned.
This one will probably last all summer.
🥴
.
That porch needs some work . . . hope the end result turns out as well as your Barn Bar did!
I’ll check in to monitor your husband’s progress.

I have a feeling it will be a nightmare. But thanks…

Well, he can do it there’s no question. But I think all of us who are loyal River Blog readers know he will get the job done. It may not be up to your standards but it will get done, lol.

I was hoping for a little more than just done on this one… which is why I was willing to wait for the contractor.

We had a porch like that and since no one uses their front porches out here, we just removed it and built a fancy entry way (well, fancy for us) https://jttwissel.com/2020/03/12/stay-home-thursdaydoors/

That’s a lovely entry.
I can say that because my husband didn’t build it.

Good luck, looking forward to seeing the progress and the sense of accomplishment when it’s done.

Your “porch” looks about as useful as the kitchen “counter” we had when we bought the house. There was one built-in floor-to-ceiling cabinet. Along the front it had a 6″ x 5′ “counter” that looked like it could be used as an assembly line for sandwiches but nothing else. Even better, it turned out to be holding up the ceiling. It was gone as soon as I ripped out the cat pee-stained carpeting in the living and dining rooms.

The porch IS useless, but that section of the house was built around it and I’m not about to redo the roofline.

On second look, the porch seems perfect for standing there, leaning on the railing, and looking cool. That top rail looks flat enough to set your drink on. Maybe you need to wear a cowboy hat when you do it.

We do stand there and watch some spectacular sunsets…. so I suppose it’s not totally useless. No hat required.

Oh, this should be good…
Your current porch looks just the right shape and size for an emaciated runway model to practice her catwalk strut.

Good from your vantage point.
From mine? Probably not…

Awkward little spot to do anything with other than maybe bay windows. That’s major work. But If you wanted something impossible like that maybe he’d have to wait… It is pretty though.

Those windows are a laundry room and a kitchen. Bay windows wouldn’t fit without a major remodel.

Bet I’m not the only one rubbing my hands together in anticipation of some wonderfully outlandish future blog posts about the porch project from hell.

Who thought about even making that a porch back in the day….it’s too small for anything. So silly.
Good lord, I hope he doesn’t hurt himself on this project!

Someone needs to tell him he’s not 20 anymore. Or even 40….
But it won’t be me.
