There she is, a 1963 Ford Falcon station wagon… complete with wood on the sides.

I don’t have to tell you this was more than slightly mortifying to a teenager. The Falcon was a lot of things, but cool wasn’t one of them.

That picture was taken in the late eighties… judging from the head to toe acid washed denim… and yes, my mother was still driving her. She grew up in NYC where no one in her era drove or even bothered to learn. The woman got her first license when she moved to the suburbs at age 40 right before I was born and didn’t enjoy it. She was a nervous and overly cautious motorist and never felt comfortable behind the wheel. She learned to drive in that Falcon and it was literally the only car she ever drove her entire life.

It had vacuum wipers, no seatbelts, an am radio, a manual choke and by the time I drove her? A top speed of 51 before she started to rattle so badly you had to slow down. It was a good thing we lived on the Island because the old girl would never have tolerated a highway.

How about you?

Name the car…

  1. I love this bit of information. Your Mom only drove ONE car her entire life. I can’t even imagine that. WOW.

There were a few different ones that I learned on, but the first that comes to mind was a Ford Escort with a stick-shift that probably needed transmission work after I was done with it.

  3. 1973 +/- Oldsmobile Delta 88, VW Sun Bug, because I moved, Navy life. The 88 was easier to drive, being an automatic but it was a total sled. The 4-speed in the bug presented a challenge for a short time, but it handled like a roller skate. It was also a convertible, so it was AWESOME.

      1. I was about 8 years old. We were driving down a dirt road, suddenly my male parent grabbed me, put me on his lap, and said “Drive!” I was so scared I guess I twisted my arms. Suddenly we were in the ditch! He never gave me another lesson.

  5. My mom’s Honda Accord. It was a stick and I’m so grateful I learned to drive on a manual. I don’t drive one now, but at least I know how. It’s kind of like swimming: even if you don’t do it a lot, you never know when you’re going to need it, and if you can’t do it, you may be sunk (pun not intended).

  6. It was my Dad’s farm truck. Can’t remember what it was, only that it was ancient, green, and three speed manual with the shifter on the column. I learned in a pasture with one tree in it. Yeah, I hit it.
