Our new den furniture has been slated for delivery so it was time to move the old stuff out.
This a weird room in our home as it’s longer than it is wide. It houses our treadmill and a leftover sleeper sofa and recliner from when we were first married… 40 years ago!
It’s old, cat scratched and needed to go.

Which was easier said than done.

Ever try to move one of those ancient sleeper sofas?
If not, I don’t recommend it.

A friend came to help my husband and as soon as they started, it got stuck.

Heavy? Yes.
Awkward? You betcha!

Making it down the hall, they tried to pivot into the living room but the sofa said… not so fast boys.

Up and over was the only way.

.
What a nightmare.
(Towel was there so they didn’t scratch the new flooring)

We were all glad to see this beast make it out the front door….

And onto my husband’s truck.

The recliner was easy in comparison.

I actually do know just how heavy and cumbersome these ancient sleeper sofas are. My ex in laws had one that never moved after it was purchased. Well, at least it’s gone from your house now. Can’t wait to see the new furniture!

As they were struggling with it I remembered that when we bought this house 20 years ago we said we would sell the house with the sofa rather than move it again.
It was a total beast.

I know, from a similar experience, that it’s easy to remove the bed, which makes the whole process easier.

It was a nightmare 20 years ago as I remember. We swore we’d burn it in place instead of ever moving it again…

I feel lucky. My front door opens directly into the living room and our floor plan makes it easier to move things around. Enjoy your new room.

When the previous owners built an addition it gave our house an L. Not conducive to furniture moving.

Did you open the bed one last time to check if you left anything inside that one of you was hiding from the other, or just a favourite set of sheets anv pillows.
I used to work for a company that that cleared out houses after the residrnts died and the kidd wanted nothing to do with what was left after they picked it over. We opened up the sofabed and found perfectly good satin sheets and pillowcases. But it was what was inside one of the pillowcases thst made our day. $1000 in crisp never circulated old $50 bills. The deal with the kids was once they wslked out the door, whatever was left was hours — no matter what. We had a great xmas party that year!
I could tell you a story about a real couch from hell, but I’ll save it for snother time. It made an od heavy sofabed a breeze.

Sleeper sofas seemed like such a great idea in the 70’s and 80’s! We bought a sectional from someone who bought their house with it already in the basement. It took six men and a boy scout plus a smart woman to get it up out of the basement. We didn’t even keep it that long.

Ugh. I don’t think we’d have been able to maneuver this beast up steps. And you’re right, I think we only used that fold out bed twice in 40 years.

We tried to give it away to friends, family and strangers. No takers.
We tried to donate it to Salvation Army, Goodwill and the Habitat for Humanity restore. They wouldn’t accept it.
We offered it to a woman’s shelter, a church and a soup kitchen. No one wanted it.
I hate to say it, but it ended up at the dump.

We have a loveseat with built-in recliners in the basement, and that thing is a pain in the ass to move. Somehow, we managed to wrestle it up three flights of stairs in our Vancouver, WA apartment. Which explains why we hired helpers when we moved.
