Is this a thing now?

.

I bought a new pair of slippers yesterday.

They’re cute, comfortable and appropriately fuzzy.

What they also are….

.

.

Is vegan.

Back in my day we used to call it faux leather… or yes, pleather.

Which, while stupid… didn’t assume I would try to eat them.

Vegan slippers?

Come on.

🥴

  1. I think it’s because a lot of vegan folks choose that lifestyle because they are against animal cruelty. They are opposed to the use of animal hides in any product as well as eating animal flesh. But that leaves you with plastics–which are not environmentally friendly–or plant products. And the more we learn about plants, the more it seems they have their own chemically based sentience and communication.

  2. Well I mean, vegan slippers. And yes, I remember the faux leather or pleather being a thing back in the day. But now vegans need to have it spelled out for them, as I’m thinking faux leather or pleather confuses vegans since they have very weak cognitive processes due to having no protein in their diet….yes that was a joke! 🙂

    1. Well, hell, just yesterday I grilled up a Faux T-Bone Steak. I know it was faux because it came wrapped in 99% recycled paper, placed in a 100% recycled plastic bag, wheeled to my car in a 0% carbon footprint cart, and grilled using natural cedar wood chips. That is enough to make it faux, at least by the standards set forth by the maker of these slippers.

  3. My slippers are vegan, too. Made from bovine hides. They are vegans.

By the way, have you ever noticed there is no singular for “cattle”? A cow is female, a bull is male, a steer is a castrated male. You can have a herd of bison or a single bison, a herd of sheep or a single sheep, you can have a herd of cattle, but you can’t have a single cattle. The only singular terms for a single domesticated bovine are gendered. How’s that for News You Can(‘t) Use?

But yeah, I knew folks even 50 years ago who wouldn’t wear leather. I didn’t yet know the term “vegan” but I knew vegans.
