.
On a miserably wet morning two and a half weeks ago …. the husband and I took off on a trip.
.

.
Roughly 4 hours later we crossed a bridge….
.

.
And reached our vacation destination.
.

.
Newport, Rhode Island.
The smallest state.
Home to the Americas Cup and Narragansett beer.
.

.
Newport is old and full of maritime history. Founded in 1639, it was an important trading port for the British colonies. After the Civil War, the Gilded Age rich chose its beautiful coast as a site for their “summer cottages” … by which I mean American castles. Today, tourists flock to its beaches and vibrant waterfront shopping and dining areas.
.

.
Newport is surrounded by water.
And lighthouses.
.

.
And criss crossed with bridges.
It’s also home to the Naval War College where my Marine Corps husband was stationed 50 years ago.
This walk down memory lane trip was part of my birthday gift to him.
Our digs for the week? A Wyndham resort on Long Wharf.
Internet photo.

My photos.
.

.

.

.
Though we had a two bedroom, two bath unit it was smaller than most of our timeshare condos.
.

.
With a seriously ugly color palette.
.

.

.
But it was clean and quiet.
.

.

.

.
With a Narragansett Bay view.
In the background, to the right.
.

.
After unpacking, we left our home base and started exploring.
( to be continued, sequentially and ad nauseam… so be prepared for photo bombs lasting into May )
😉

Hey, no problem. Travel posts are my game!

We were there for 8 days, 7 nights and didn’t have time to do all the things on my list. May have to book a return …

Looking forward to your spectacular photos!
This is a part of America I’m attracted to, starting at Boston and up and down the coast. Don’t know much about Rhode Island so really looking forward!

You may regret that statement, I’m scheduling into May…

Can’t say as I ever thought much about Rhode Island – place for rich people and some famous art school. I’ll be pleased to see photos of some of the old grand homes –

There will be lots of those. And while there’s a lot of wealth in that area, it also has a working waterfront and a large down home Irish population for balance.

I’ve never been to RI so will be interested in what you saw. Agree about the decor in that timeshare. Uh huh.

The colors were awful. Blue carpet, orange chairs, grey curtains. Ugh.

We went there and I remember being on the highway saying, “There’s Rhode Island! Whoops, you passed it.” and having to turn around. Lol

Oh, and I likes the blues in your rooms.

It IS small. But the good news is it doesn’t take very long to get places.

Ahh, another sneaky getaway like your SC trip that will provide blog fodder for weeks to come. You’re a pro at subterfuge.
I always assumed Delaware was the smallest state. My bad!

I’m the queen of blog scheduling.
Rhode Island is roughly 1,500 square miles, Delaware is roughly 2,500.
For comparison, the greater metro area of Houston is larger than Rhode Island.

I’ve always wanted to visit Newport. It does look lovely and I look forward to alllll your posts. 🙂 Yeah, the color palette in the unit is dreadful, good thing you have the outside to enjoy.

And this was a newly renovated condo. Whatever they paid the designer? It was too much.
