Maps, glorious maps.

.

Let’s explore…

.

.

I’m surprised Maine is on the higher side of this. Must be the northern half…

.

.

That’s beyond disturbing.

.

.

This is even more so.

😳

.

.

People do love to live near the water.

.

.

I’m surprised more states in my area aren’t green. New Englanders are traditionally frugal.

.

.

I blame Maine’s rate on the lobster. Who wants to eat it without a pound of melted butter…

😉

  1. Of course Minnesotans have a lot of $ in the bank. We need it to pay our exorbitant taxes!!
I’m happy where we stand with smoking but we could do better on the obesity front. On that note, I probably shouldn’t have bought all those ice cream sandwiches the last time I was at the store (but there are just so many new and interesting varieties available these days).
The map comparing coastal vs interior population density is fascinating.

  2. I’m shocked I’m just now hearing about this gargantuan garbage patch in the middle of the country! It’s appalling! All I can think to say is, “Thanks, Obama!”

    1. Shirley, you must be joking. Since I don’t know you, I can’t be sure. First, the garbage patch is not in the US. It is a representation to show the size of the Pacific garbage patch relative to the size of the US. Second, it has nothing to do with Obama.

      1. I did some research. Projection maps are notorious for distorting the size of garbage patches. The patch is really much smaller, about the size of a small pony (and the continental US the size of a severely obese Clydesdale).

Maps like that are needlessly alarming.

And in conclusion, as the wise Leslie Nielsen once sagely put it, “Don’t call me Shirley.”

  3. I always look forward to your maps! The garbage patch in the middle of the country is probably due to their land-locked status – the other states dump their garbage into the ocean or into the Great Lakes … sad but true.

    1. I hope that was a joke. The garbage patch is not in the US. It is in the Pacific Ocean. And no, we don’t dump our garbage in the Great Lakes., We bury it. There is a big hill on the edge of my town that used to be flat. And Shoreline Amphitheatre in Santa Clara CA is atop a garbage dump. They had to install methane vents after the ground caught fire during a concert.

      1. Shoreline Amphitheater (in Mountain View, not Santa Clara, unless you meant county) stopped accepting garbage from the Great Lakes region in the 80s, when those states refused to sort and remove recyclables. California can’t mix garbage with recycling, and has another amphitheater in Alameda where they bury the recyclables.
