Maps that don’t take you anywhere.

.

.

In case you can’t see it, this is Maine’s.

.

.

Not too disturbing when drawn, but a bit creepy when experienced in person.

.

.

😳

.

.

I’m right in the middle, which is where I want to be.

.

.

I thought my state would rank higher.

Disappointing, that.

.

.

Looks like I’m not doing enough drinking.

.

.

Electronics seem to win the prize.

.

.

Mark and Shelly, where do your towns stand on the cow to human scale?

.

.

Don’t laugh. Moose will flat take you out…

These numbers astound me. My husband and I bought our first house, a 3 bedroom 2 bath ranch, for $45,000. Granted that was in 1985 but the income to mortgage ratio was much smaller then. How many young couples starting out today can afford a half a million dollars home? It’s crazy.

  1. I was not shocked to see PA’s mascot as Gritty, but I was pleasantly surprised PA was actually on the left side of that death ledger. The cost of buying a home continues to amaze me…exactly as you noted here. WHO is buying these 1/2 a mil houses? We still have houses our way being built with a $800K price tag. Incomes and housing costs are so out of touch with one another.

  2. 1) Why would we laugh at moose, when white-tailed deer is deadliest in several states?
    2) Bernie Brewer as scariest mascot in Wisconsin seems out of place with the deadliness of white-tailed deer (“fear the deer” Is the Milwaukee Bucks’ slogan) and the Hodag is way scarier.
    3) Not merely a coincidence, the best places to ride a bike in Wisconsin have the highest cow to human ratios.
    4) Highest consumption of spirits tells us less than consumption per capita.
    5) Keep it up! I love your maps! (And maps In general.(

  3. We’re in adjoining counties, but both of those are in the 0-0.5 cow:human ratio. Not surprising for Madison, but more so for my rural town.

I was born in Hawaii, so I’m very happy to see that #1 ranking!

  4. I don’t know what’s disturbing abut the University of Washington’s Husky mascot. I third generation Husky and they use a real Husky dog and their owner runs them around the football field before games. Beautiful dogs!

      1. I can attest to that, especially this time of the year. I came close to hitting a deer this morning and then another jumped out in front of me this evening. Fortunately, there was no one behind me and I was able to stop in time. With the time change it’s dark earlier. I’m not sure how I even saw him in time. Ugh. 😎

  5. Wow, Texas seems to consume a lot of alcohol. But then again with Hot Wheels Abbott as governor, why wouldn’t we drink that much. Feral hogs are a menace in Texas, they are overrunning cotton and vegetable crops.

  6. Ooh, Minnesota is 6th in life expectancy – nice!
I would think our drinking ranking would be because we have to deal with the cold winters, but then you should have the same ranking as us, so maybe that’s not the reason.
Ha! The Husband bought me a weighted blanket for Christmas a couple of years ago. I hated it. Returned it. Later found out that there are different weights for different sizes of people, and he might have gotten me one that’s too heavy for my frame, but I’m not convinced I would have liked it.
I’m definitely not laughing at moose. We have them here, too, and I know they’re dangerous. I’m laughing at whitetail deer. Then again, I’ve totaled my car against one of those in Wisconsin, and it was no laughing matter!

  7. How are these maps generated? I’m stunned to see that property in those West Coast states (Washington and California is it? I’m useless at US Geography) appears to be more expensive than New York… Love the mascots btw
