Are you watching the Winter Olympics?

.

I love the Olympic Games and try to watch as much as I can. The excitement of competition, the thrill of victory, the heartbreak of defeat, the human interest stories… it’s all good.

I like it so much, sometimes I watch two sports at once.

.

I also do this :

.

But that’s neither here nor there there.

Sadly, scandal has once again raised its ugly head to mar the purity of the games.

This year? It’s a little more…

Interesting.

.

Say it isn’t so.

Damn.

.

They say people will do anything to win.

I think this qualifies.

  1. I sometimes ride a stationary bike while watching so as not to be a complete potato. I heard a radio interview with someone whose area of research is wearable technology. The interviewer asked her about the Olympic controversy – first they were just adding extra fabric, then the scanning became necessary. The article you cite talks about the simulation they ran to determine the advantage added. They could have just gone with stimulation for that satisfying difference..

  2. I heard about this. I couldn’t figure out why you’d want to “bulk up” because my kids were swimmers. My daughter swam in the PAC 12 on scholarship and they wanted to eliminate any extra bulk and streamline. My husband explained the extra let them float a little longer in the air. So bizarre!

  3. Talk about a ‘marginal gain.’ I guess when you’re fighting for every inch of flight, you start looking for inches wherever you can find them. It gives a whole new meaning to ‘sticking the landing.

Finally, a sport where being ‘over-inflated’ is a performance requirement rather than a personality trait. Talk about a stiff competition.
