Swelling, flowers and home health.

.

The day after surgery found me extremely tired with a leg so swollen it felt like it wanted to burst.

Tight, stiff and with the compression stocking? It feels like a giant sausage in a too small casing. The inside of my calf is still numb so I guess the nerve block hasn’t worn off yet. Thankfully there’s no real pain, just discomfort. I’m sure the pain will hit soon, and I can’t say I’m looking forward to it.

Our daughter of the heart sent flowers so that made me smile. Not much else does right now. I caught a few hours of sleep but not enough to feel rested. I have to use the walker for every step and lying around on the couch all day is already getting old.

I’ll have home health PT for the first two weeks and they visited yesterday to assess our house and how well I’m getting around. Had to prove I can get in and out of bed and use the toilet without help, which thankfully I can.

The husband is being a good nurse, running and fetching and making sure I don’t fall.

This isn’t going to be fun and it’s just getting started… so I’ll try not to bitch too much.

      1. I visited my brother shortly after he fell this past spring. I took over the routine household duties (he lives alone) including feeding the cat. I did a miserable job, according to the cat.

  1. I threw away my compression stockings the other day. They were a bear to get on and I had a whole soundtrack going for them. I thought about home health PT and they were going to send a person to me but in the end, I just stayed home another week and then week to PT nearby. I was worried about the little black pug taking over my session time!

Find a couple of good books, dreams to continue, a few good shows. I even wrote about them this past week home renovation shows my husband watches and got me to watch. I also brought my password book up to date and made phone calls to family I had not spoken to in 6 months. It is amazing the things you can think of doing but then again I grew up in the middle of the Catskills, so I had to be inventive. Take care of yourself!

      1. I even took a book down about Middle Eastern history that I bought while I was studying linguistics and wrote about it for my thesis and then I thought ‘naw, I am good.’ Went to the library sale. Leaner with books. The husband did get a little worried when I started looking around to make us even lighter.

  2. Oh do bitch away – it’s a helluva inconvenience to say the very least – and it will make you laugh – at least whinging and whining always makes me laugh at myself – I don’t know how much it amuses anyone else, people tend to be kind, bless them. My husband had home p/t several times (unfortunately) but they were always really good guys and we enjoyed their company and their help. And it was certainly easier than bundling him into an Uber XL and maneuvering him around a facility.

  3. Bitch as much as you feel!
I didn’t get compression stockings. I was supposed to have home PT but I was driving before the referral came through – and there was nowhere to do it anyway. Imagine everything you’re experiencing – but solo with a zillion cats that need food/water!

    Ongoing good juju to you!!

  4. Sending so much healing energy your way, Rivergirl! That description of your compression stocking feeling like a casing on a giant sausage had me laughing out loud—fashion definitely takes a back seat when we’re in recovery mode! Glad your husband is taking such great care of you, even if Dudley is plotting a treat revolt over the walker. I loved reading halffastcyclingclub’s comment about the grippy socks. 😊

  5. I recognize the hospital no-slip socks. After the Husband’s health ordeal last winter/spring, I think he has a pair in every color of the rainbow.
So what would happen if you couldn’t prove to them you could do those tasks? Could they force you to stay in a rehab facility or something?

    1. No, they probably would have recommended I buy a toilet seat lift and sleep in a different bed. Ours is really high.
And the socks aren’t sexy, but man. They’re definitely helpful when you’re unsteady on your feet.

  6. Sigh. You have a long road ahead of you, but it’s a ‘must-travel road’ to reach the point where you can live your life again without pain.

    Love the sweet flowers!!
