Jerome, Arizona

Relax.

This will be a red rockless post.

Our next trip was 20 miles south of Sedona to an old mining ghost town called Jerome.

And like the 20 mile north trip we took to pine forested, snowy Flagstaff….

img_2482

This was a radically different topography as well.

Goodbye red rock canyons….

img_2485

Hello flat open grasslands that turned into hills…

img_2486

And switchback filled mountain roads….

Leading ever upward in elevation.

img_2489

We saw signs of the town’s mining past.

img_2492

And kept climbing.

img_2495

And climbing..

img_2496

And climbing, straight up.

img_2498

We bypassed the mine…

img_2499

And climbed farther up…

img_2500

Where the road narrowed to crazy proportions….

img_2501

Until we finally glimpsed our destination.

img_2505

If there’s an asylum?

You know I have to visit.

img_2507

The Jerome Grand Hotel, which used to be a hospital with a slightly checkered past.

img_2506

Perched high above the town…

img_2508

With a bar that used to house mental patients.

Now that’s my kind of place.
