If you’ve ever visited Mount Washington and driven through the valley, you know there’s one structure that dominates the landscape.

The regal Mount Washington resort. Built in 1902 she’s been the hotel to the rich, the famous and everyone in between. The cheapest room is over $500 a night and if you want a king size bed with a view? Prepare to pay $1,500.

As you turn in the driveway, geese.

Geese… everywhere.

Circle past the front door to the parking lot, which is a bit of a hike if you’re too cheap to pay valet… which we were… and then stroll back.

Past some climbing vines….

And an impressive row of chrysanthemums.

Everywhere you look? It’s spectacular.

Even the portico ceiling.

And then you walk inside….

It looks very quiet, like the scene of a potential crime by someone very wealthy and politically connected not to be discovered or a relative of someone very famous. 5 years from now, the pics will be disclosed and people will note, “But they have so much money and so many opportunities..why….” It does look like a wonderful place to start a fiction book.

  6. The first time I ever heard of this resort was when I was a kid (um, that ‘s a long time ago) and they were hosting a tennis tournament there. Saw it on tv, and the place looked majestic both inside and out. This place is definitely on the NE trip list. I am looking forward to more pics.

      1. SOMEWHERE IN TIME (1980) is one of those films which, it seems, people either like a lot (mostly women) or not at all (mostly men). It stars Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour (I happen to like it a lot).

  10. It reminds me a bit of the Stanley Hotel in Colorado, which served as the inspiration for “The Shining” (see, there’s even a Maine connection!). Tara and I talked about staying there for one of our anniversaries, but then life happened. Ahh, well. Maybe someday (though New Hampshire might be just as close now…)
