Let’s play.

.

Because there’s still a kid inside of you… somewhere.

.

.

The first things that sprang to mind when I read this weren’t material.

Yes, I have the family silver…

.

.

Which I rarely use as you can tell by the embarrassing level of tarnish.

Yes, I have great grandmother’s antique French dessert set…

.

.

Which to be honest, I have never used and polish even less.

And yes I have my father’s paintings which will always be the first things I grab if our house is burning down …

.

.

But the two things I’m most glad my parents gave me are my love of reading and the natural world.

My passion for both make me feel as if part of them is still with me. And that’s the treasure I hold dear.

How about you?…

What do you still have of your parent’s?

  1. I inherited these, rather than being given them. The parents never gave me anything that was keep-worthy. But from my mother, via my aunt, I inherited a quilt she knitted when she was learning to knit. The design never ended where it should have, and it had 5 sides. It was imperfect — like my mother.
From my sperm donor, via his eldest son, Gail selected some welding artwork. He might not have been good at much, but he could wield a welding torch like it was a paintbrush. He made three owls sitting on branches, a mother owl and two young owls (too big for babies). If not for her someone else would have them, or they would have ended up in the garbage.

  2. Beautiful post, both in a “material” sense and spiritual sense.

My parent divorced when I was a boy and my father ‘absconded,’ so I’m left with nothing of his but old photos. of happier days. My mother had a hard life raising and supporting my sister and me, and I treasure every one of he many things she left me. I won’t even try to go into specifics because I can feel tears coming just thinking about it.

  3. My mothers original wedding ring set, which is beautiful. My grandmother left my mom a crochet doily she made herself and I have that now. My grandfathers clay pot which I keep my kitchen that holds my utensils. I also have a heart shaped sapphire white gold pendant from my favorite aunt, my dad’s sister. So not technically just my parents but my family in general. As well as my sense of humor and sense of adventure (that I’ve put on mute lately.)
