Horny sturgeon.

.

As we were leaving the A1 diner the other day we noticed a large group of people gathered on the bridge spanning the river next door.

.

.

It only took a moment of looking down to realize what they were all there to watch.

.

.

The sturgeon were spawning.

If you’ve never seen a sturgeon take my word for it, they’re a big strong fish.

As I was taking this video some young men were on the far bank fishing. Since the sturgeon are a protected species this is highly illegal and a woman on the bridge starts screaming at them to leave at the end of this clip. Keep an eye on the water, one of the sturgeon jumped near the end.

It was an interesting way to end the afternoon.

  1. 🎵Like a sturgeon; being touched for the very first time… 🎵
That is such a cool sight to see! I once was kayaking in the river close to my old home and the carp were spawning. The water was so shallow you could see their dorsal fins breaking through the surface and the water appeared to be boiling with their thrashings. The carp were quite huge, but not as big as those sturgeons! Thanks for sharing!

  2. I’m with the woman – I’d be ‘rabid’, too. Too many are just ignorant and/or careless about the problems the environment has and how humans are the cause of them (and their demise will be at their own hand). If the fishermen catch the fish on their way to breeding there will soon be no fish. It’s happened before in many places, and continues happening, across the world. I watched a documentary the other day where the tide was coming in and the guys had big nets catching the fish as they came in to spawn. They threw away some of the smaller ones, but as human populations grow we need more fish spawning, not less. It’s backwards.

    1. I agree completely. But it would have been just as effective if she had walked down there and told them face to face instead of screaming it off the bridge.
