The… but it has nowhere to go so that’s a half assed solution…. project.

Remember the river I blogged about a while back? The one that runs between our house and garage every time we have heavy rain?

The one I’m blaming on our new and pretty, but clearly sloping the wrong way driveway?

.

.

Well, our contractor came up with an idea to fix the problem and offered to implement the plan…. which led to this.

.

.

My thrifty husband wanting to save money and doing it himself.

.

.

I was thrilled with the idea of sinking a catch basin and perforated drainage line to direct the water to flow elsewhere.

.

.

Except my spouse…king of the half assed, why bother doing it correctly the first time if you can save on labor projects… had another idea.

.

.

Oh, he sunk the catch basin.

.

.

And screwed the cover on.

.

.

But decided this was enough and no drainage lines were necessary.

.

.

So now we have a catch basin with nowhere for the water to go.

.

.

Yes, he put it in the right spot where water collects… as shown by the morning after a heavy rain.

.

.

But as soon as the basin fills up no further drainage is achieved and we still have standing water.

.

.

Sigh…

  7. Oh yes, another Hubs project! So now that you know it doesn’t work (the way your husband did it) is he planning on installing drainage lines? Even I could tell that it wasn’t going to work when I saw that picture, lol. Well give him an “A” for effort!

  8. Oh boy! I had this EXACT same issue after my huge concrete project at my little house at the bluff. I had concrete poured to place my metal garage on and all around the back of the little house UP TO The wooden deck. They supposedly ran drains under the TWO FEET of concrete to empty below my deck. Water would stand any time there was just a LITTLE rain. They came back and cut through the concrete, put in a pool drain, and STILL, I hear the new owner are drilling holes around it for water to drain. I wonder what they’ll come up with? I would go out each time to use a super long screwdriver to unplug the little holes all up and down the cuts too. Why did this happen? A 10 year old could see that it wasn’t poured in the RIGHT DIRECTION or slope. Even after I stood out there with them when they were first measuring (their thoughts—slope it away from the house so water won’t run into the house,…good plan! Then they sloped it BACK to the house so water wouldn’t run into the garage? SO…in the middle is the pond they created. Oy vey! Kudos to your husband for giving it a whirl himself! On to more drain lines I’m assuming. I wish you the best! It’s more than aggravating!!

      1. Your advice will be worth thousands of dollars if together you get it right. Send him a (fake) bill for however much you think you saved by giving him good advice — once the project is finished. Let him know how much you are worth to him, in case he has forgotten, or is taking you for granted.
