I love a good museum, and the fact that this one was a complete surprise made it all the more special.
.

.
The Hudson at the University of Maine, Orono is billed as a Native American/Anthropology museum and features an impressive collection from indigenous people all around the world.

.
I fell in love with Kachinas when we visited Arizona in 2019.
.

.
They’re marvelous!
.

.
Seriously, what’s not to love?
.

.
For a small museum, the Hudson has some wonderful pieces.
.

.
Both ancient and modern.
.

.
Have you ever heard of a potlatch?
.

.
I hadn’t either, but I really liked the whale in the back.
.

.
So many beautiful handcrafted pieces of art.

To be continued….

That last Kachina in your photo is fabulous!

I came much too close to paying $1,500 for one in Sedona, Arizona. They’re fabulous!

I have been “schooled” so to speak, in how New Mexico’s Navajo tribe lives, works and goes to school and about how they are very involved in their children’s future. They have more than a few Native universities around the state and they teach how to make things like the Katchina. They also teach how to live off the land, grow conventional crops, harvest, navigate by the stars and do a many great things that only their ancestors can teach. The Navajo Universities actually teach in their students courses about Native American ways that conventional universities don’t or don’t know how. I have a high respect for the Native people of this country. I’ve met with several tribes women and they are, to say the least, amazing!

Wow! Amazing artifacts. We still throw parties and expect gifts. We just call them weddings or housewarmings. 😉

Yes, but traditionally a potlatch ceremony was a for redistributing wealth. Not too much of that going on anymore.

When we see things we really love that we’re unlikely to ever see the likes of again, we should get them. You with Kachina and me with the marionette I didn’t get. A few precious things that we fall in love with over and over are worth it.

If I had been shopping by myself, I probably would have.

I’d heard of a potlatch and knew it was a Native American gathering of some sort, but I didn’t know all those details. Cool.
