What’s that old saying…
You can’t keep a good man down?
.

.
But I guess they tried.

.
I never knew the superstition went back this far.

Rather like a giant toothpick.
Interesting…

With nothing to do all day but hunt and gather, I guess they let their imaginations run wild.

To be fair…fighting off saber tooth tigers and mammoths took up a lot of time.

The European settlers in these parts buried their dead near their homes in linear mounds. The burial mounds had air vents in case the dead still needed to breathe – at least that’s what the archaeologists of the future thought: “Archeologists first thought these were burial mounds in emulation of the previous society of mound builders. They were almost exclusively long, narrow mounds, rectangular in shape, located near their dwellings. They contained vent pipes to the surface. At first, scientists hypothesized that this was how they buried their dead, and that the vents were placed in the belief that the souls of the dead were still alive and needed air to breathe. When we analyzed the contents of these vaults, we found them to be almost exclusively decayed fecal matter and a primitive paper. Current thinking is that these people literally worshiped their own shit.” Photo available here: https://halffastcyclingclub.wordpress.com/2020/06/26/future-archeology/

Stomach burial, eh? The idea of the dead clawing their way down instead of up does have a certain sense to it.
