.
As you know, my husband takes on a lot of projects around our house.
A lot of projects he probably shouldn’t.
.

.
Yes, he saves us money we’d otherwise spend on contractors… but those savings come at a price.
Workmanship he would never accept from a contractor are commonplace. Like these unevenly matched boards I’m sure to stub a toe on.
.

.
Mitered corners?
.

.
Not his strong suit.
.

.
Gaps?
Yeah, we’ve got those too.
.

.
The composite decking is finished.
.

.
And while this end looks pretty good…
.

.
The other end was a total clusterf*ck.
I gasped when I went out there and saw how far off the edge was… thinking, surely he’s going to fix that.
.

.
But no.
That’s the finished product.
Close on the left, but not nearly close enough on the right.
This is what you get when you don’t hire a professional.
🥴
.
Make sure future buyers never see this post!

Scrubbing my social media of his mistakes is going to take serious time…

You need a bush. I’d go with an evergreen. I actually had the opposite problem. Our front porch was moved during an mild earthquake. What had been square became a bit of a trapezoid. Unlike your situation, one end of our porch was sticking too far out. I had to screw a long tapered board to the front of the step to support the decking.

Thankfully there’s a large cedar blocking it from direct view.

Well, it’s all cosmetic isn’t it? Isn’t it?… 😜

Yes. But if it’s cosmetic… shouldn’t it look better?

On the other hand my husband is a perfectionist and nothing ever gets finished!

We have that problem as well… without perfection.

While I admire your husband’s can do spirit, if the finished product isn’t up to your standards then it’s not really a savings. It’s just another problem that’ll have to be fixed eventually. That corner mess would drive me nuts, I understand your situation.

Clearly the existing frame had shifted and he didn’t realize it. And he keeps telling me the decking is perfectly squared…

Exactly. Close has always been good enough for him…

my dad had a tongue in cheek thing he said: “good enough for who it’s for.” Greg and I use that all the time just for fun.

LOL, yeah. My husband is handy around the house, but the only thing is a total perfectionist on is tiles. He’s really good at tiles.

With two bathrooms that need updating, I’d settle for that.

Maybe it’ll get fixed if he’s the one stubbing his toe.

Once it’s built, he’ll never go out there again….
