Grateful.

.

I found an interesting bottle of wine at the store the other day…

.

.

And since I prefer white to red, am thinking I might just install it in the man cave/Barn Mahal as a musical curio instead of cracking the top.

.

.

Being a long time Dead fan it seems more appropriate.

R.I.P. Phil.

  1. I prefer a good Zin to almost any white. I’d offer to take it off your hands and drink it if I were closer. (Though whether it is a good Zin, I don’t know. I only found a review of the 2020, not the 2022.) I spent yesterday morning watching a Grateful Dead concert from 1978. A few hours later, I learned that Phil had died.

  2. I didn’t know you were a deadhead! Did you know that about me?

Man, we have a lot to talk about. I love the initial “Where was your first show? How many shows have you seen? What was your tape collection like” on and on I could ask questions and have fun remembering. Or have I forgotten we already did this?

I was walking in the woods taking photos of a huge buck yesterday when I heard Phil had died. The buck was looking right at me. I like to think all giant beasts stood up in honor of Phil right then, since he was a giant beast of a bass player. And I don’t think that is a stretch!

    1. Aww, that’s perfect! Phil would approve…

First concert – Cumberland County Civic Center… Portland, Maine spring of ‘79. I was 15.
How many shows? Geesh, I’m not sure. 18-20?
I only had a few tapes, wasn’t that into them. Still have most of my vinyl though.

      1. Sweet all over!

First show: Richmond (Virginia) Colosseum 1985, I too was 15. Tracy and I like to remind each other that we were both dropped off at our first Dead shows because neither of us could drive (his was in Iowa and something like 1979 like you).

How many: I never can remember, but my ex-husband kept track. Maybe 100? I get the numbers mixed up with number of Phish shows I’ve seen. I was lucky to live in the NW for a while and caught Phish there (rarity) and the Dead more on the East Coast.

I wasn’t a taper, but my Grateful Dead mentor was – he still has his enormous collection, and I had a few cherish duplicates. Now, his Dead mentor was David Schools, the bassist for Widespread Panic (they were teens then) so my friend likes to joke that Dave is my grand-mentor. I did see a show with him once, one where I spent the whole time lusting after his girlfriend’s beautiful hairy legs. That was a strange day.

      2. Ha!
Most Dead concerts resulted in strange days. 😉
My time following them was limited as I married young. My husband despises drugs and would never be comfortable in that scene. Remember… he went to Woodstock, and left.

      1. I hear you. Mayer is quite the surprise though, and after you get over him actually *moving* on stage (the gall!) then he’s good to listen to! As a Phish fan I LOVED when Trey sat in for Jerry on that tour. I hear you, though. There will never ever be another Jerry in any way.

      2. Phish is all the playfulness in contrast to the Dead’s seriousness. The Dead has my heart, but Phish is much more fun. I wish you’d have gotten to see them before all the kids took over the lots.

  3. It’s definitely a lifestyle not many people are into. Tracy never was into the drugs, just the music and the fun scene. I was a bit of a nut about it all, I must admit. Do you just never mention it now?

      1. My roomie in college is like that now with her husband. I don’t go on an on about it (contrary to this conversation!) but I do love to reminisce when I can. Several friends texted last night about Phil – I’m so glad you posted. You know GDTRFG is my blog name, yeah? Let’s assume > Not Fade Away. 🙂

      2. When I get together with old friends I reminisce… and he laughs, but I know he doesn’t like it. Clearly his water doesn’t taste like wine.

  4. My brother really liked them. He introduced them to his son, my nephew, early. This made me think of him. It’s been a year and a half already since he passed.

I think it’s cool they created a wine like this. Thanks for posting!
