In honor of the season.
.

.
While I often enjoy the upbeat and light heartened songs of Christmas, it’s the more heartfelt and poignant tunes that I tend to call my favorites.
.
.
Yes, he’s promising to be home… but so often the ones who we dream about sharing the holidays with are not.
And after watching the most excellent movie “Monuments Men”?
I will never hear this song without choking up.
.
.
Your turn.
Favorite Christmas carol…?
.
Oh man, that’s impossible. I love all the crooner carols. And even though I couldn’t name a single other Mariah Carey song and don’t listen to/like her music, I love “All I Want For Christmas Is You.” Still, gosh, I guess I’d have to say the Sarah MacLachlan/Barenaked Ladies “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen/We Three Kings.” And 500 other songs! See? Impossible.

But thanks for trying…

I can never hear “What a Wonderful World” without seeing the napalm montage from GOOD MORNING VIETNAM. Kinda wrecked the father-daughter dance for me at a friend’s wedding. I used to love “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” because I was so far away and couldn’t wait to get back to my family in New Hampshire, but times change. Probably Leroy Anderson’s “Sleigh Ride” is my favorite Christmas carol, even though I’m normally partial to lyrics. It’s just so joyful, and I love the trombones.

It is joyful.
Good choice.

Hard to pick 1 favorite: Last christmas (Wham), This christmas (Chris Brown), Oh holy night (Gospel choir version), 12 pains of Christmas (Ray Stevens), 12 days of Christmas (Straight No Chaser & The Muppet Version)

Until I went to a Trans-Siberian Orchestra concert I didn’t have a favorite Christmas Carol. But now in lieu of traditional Christmas songs I love listening to their albums Christmas Eve and Other Stories and The Lost Christmas Eve. My favorite song is Christmas Nights In Blue. It’s a jazzy, upbeat, maybe not so Carol, carol….lol.

It is an awesome show! It should be on everyone’s bucket list!

Never heard of that one. I’ll have to check it out.

I’ll cheat slightly (though I see I’m not the first to do so) – my favorite is (tenor saxophonist) Dexter Gordon’s rendition of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”. The melody is just the starting point for a piece of music you could listen to even if it isn’t Christmas. While he returns to the melody periodically, there are times you can forget you’re listening to a Christmas carol.

Or maybe “Father Christmas” by the Kinks. Now THAT captures the spirit of the season.

Easy peasy: A ‘Christmas Canon’ by Trans Siberian Orchestra! Not really happy or sad, but damn, the melody, blend of instruments, and the powerful vocals are just second to none! It blows every other attempt at a Christmas song into irrelevance.

Oh heck yeah!! I mean all of their Christmas songs are awesome!

“Christmas Wrapping” by The Waitresses. If we’re going traditional/sentimental, Michael Crawford’s “O Holy Night” can’t be beat. His vocals are goosebump-inspiring.

I seem to like all the ones that annoy other people: Carol of the bells, the Paul McCartney one, th one by The Waitresses..
In other news, there are 2 pics for you at the end of my current post. I’m pretty sure one has been posted before – by either you or me.

I’ve always been fond of “Carol of the Bells,” and my name’s not even Carol! 😉 I’m here because of Mark Petruska’s blog. It seems dumb that you and I aren’t blog friends yet, so I’m going to change that!

Welcome Lisa! Any friend of Mark’s… is probably a little “off” so we should get along fine.

Lol! So agreed! Also, I’m just going to point out that it’s “Ilsa” now so that it’s not three months from now, and you’re like, “Crap, I’ve been writing it wrong this whole time. Now what do I do?” All good! 😛

I just realized my mistake and was off to “comments” to edit it… but of course you beat me to it. A little rude that, but since it’s your first day here, I’ll let it slide.

Hahaha. I shall next time leave a respectful time frame in which you may wish to edit a comment. My apologies. 😛

I’m not into xmas, but there’s one song I can listen to any time of year — because to me every day is a good day to feel generous and loving. No one else has played the song they are talking about, so I won’t either. But Snoopy’s Christmas is quite easy to find on line, and is sure to make you forget the troubles of this world for a few minutes…
