.
After avoiding the dreaded ‘Rona for 4 years and tricking myself into believing we were either uncannily lucky or simply immune…
.

.
The modern equivalent of the plague found me and I popped positive for Covid.
Life since has … quite frankly…. been hell.
Four days ago I had a slight sore throat.
Three days ago I took to bed and stayed there for 36 hours barely able to raise my head. Blinding headache, killer sinus pressure, body aches, congestion, coughing, chills, crippling fatigue. I was down for the count. And pretty much on my own because as much as I love my husband, he’s the worst nurse on the face on the planet.
Yesterday I managed a shower and did a victory lap to the kitchen for a bowl of chicken soup. Which I fixed myself.
This morning?
My ever so thoughtful husband stood at the edge of our bed shaking my foot (at 3:00 am…. WTF!) telling me I had to get up and test him.
.

.
So now he’s in bed, where I was three days ago, whining non stop and expecting me…. who, hello? is sick with the very same thing… to cater to his every need. He may be a Marine, but when he’s sick he’s a big fat baby.
Hence, Hell.
Life right now is Hell.
Did I mention I just had to cancel a non refundable week long holiday vacation we’d booked at a fabulous resort in the Berkshire Mountains starting tomorrow? No quintessential Norman Rockwell Christmas in Stockbridge, no horse drawn sleigh ride, (I had to cancel that too) no sipping hot toddies on the Red Lion Inn’s porch.
Hell, I tell you.
Hell.
😫

Were you out in a crowd?

We went out for a late lunch at a mostly empty seafood place on the coast. The bartender had her two grandchildren at a table close by. They were sniffling. I should have run for the door …

You know, I said to the Husband last night: I think I might text Mark Petruska tomorrow and tell him I’m worried about Rivergirl. She hasn’t responded to comments in, like, three days. She NEVER goes that long without engaging. I’m worried something bad happened. And although what my imagination, uh, imagined was worse than a bad case of COVID and I’m glad I was wrong, I am very sorry you’ve been so badly under the weather (with a husband who’s a rotten nurse – I have one of those, too).
Now, to commiserate:
Here’s what I wrote in my Christmas letter about what happened right after we got back from Australia:
Sixteen hours after our plane touched down in Minneapolis and 4.5 years after the start of the pandemic, I came down with my first case of COVID, forcing me to dig out my recipe for crow and acknowledge that I don’t, in fact, have natural immunity, a highly disputed claim I’d been taunting the Husband with since his COVID Christmas evacuation from England in 2021. He hazed me into the Coronavirus Sufferers’ Club with lots of supportive comments like “suck it up” and “this is nothing compared to how bad I had it.” Clearly, he missed his calling as a nurse. I’m grateful it wasn’t a serious case, but I’m still mourning the demise of my General Theory of Immunological Superiority.
I hope your improvement is rapid and your husband appreciates that you’ll be the nurse he wasn’t. Feel better soon!

Aww, thank you. Nice to know I was missed. I’ve always said if I wasn’t blogging I was probably dead, and this sure felt like it. My superior immunity is now shot…. And that hurts almost as most.

Ugh, and that missed trip!! As the Travel Architect, I must say that is the worst new of all (provide you both survive the virus).

And because we were concentrating on home improvements this year we hadn’t been anywhere since our January trip to Charleston.

And why couldn’t he test himself (esp at 3am)?? I’ve never seen the tests you posted, only the ones that sorta resemble a preggo test.

He’s helpless with things like that. Too many small instructions. But when I’m feeling better? He’ll pay for that 3:00 am wake up call….

Aww that royally sucks…the one and only Covid hit me was on my 50th bday back in April of 2020. Talk about the worst birthday. So I hear ya.

Oh my gosh, River, I’m sorry to hear that you’ve caught this horrid virus. Believe me I understand completely how you feel. I was also thinking I would never get it since I ad all my vaccines, boosters and and every updated booster since. Then in July I caught it, after four and a half years of after pando hit. There is nothing worse, well maybe except having the hubs being a big baby about having caught it as well, lol. I too was wondering why your responses to your posts had gone silent. But, even though COVID is a menace, I’m glad you are okay other than feeling miserable at the moment. Get better soon River!

Thanks. It hit me hard the first few days but I’m feeling slightly more human now.
I had the first few shots but haven’t had the last few boosters. At this point I’m wondering if they matter since the husband has had them all but we’re both sick.

There’s always a new variety for which they have no vaccination yet. (Fingers crossed!) We have not had it yet, so I don’tknow how it feels. But tell hubby to Marine Up, or you’ll tell his buddies next chance you get!

Booo! Absolutely sucky. I am so sorry about your Christmas plans (which sounded AMAZING) and your wimpy-when-sick husband. I lost my sense of smell when I got COVID. And I felt like I had the worst cold ever, but the vaccinations at least kept me from running a fever (which was why I thought I had my son and husband’s cold until I couldn’t smell and did a COVID test). I hope your husband’s version is lighter than yours, too–even though I am sure he will act like it isn’t!

A friend of mine lost her sense of taste and smell for two years due to Covid, it was awful. And no matter how light my husband’s case is…. the whining will be fierce.

Check your credit card terms. Some come with travel insurance and you may be able to get a refund through them. (That said, dealing with travel insurance claims is a pain. I had to submit all sorts of documentation to get a claim satisfied – though not through the credit card company.)
Sorry you missed your vacation. Having canceled one trip due to illness (babesiosis and Lyme disease) and been sick during another trip (COVID-19), it’s hard to say which was worse.
I was going to say something about your husband insisting you test him (like why couldn’t he do it himself) but I have a spouse that will spoil 2-3 tests by misunderstanding the instructions unless I handle it, so I get it.
Nothing like someone demanding you take care of him while you’re sick yourself. Take it easy! (or as easy as you can.)

The resort had strict policies on cancellations under a week and I cancelled three days before we were due to arrive. At least there were no airline hassles, we planned on driving.
As for taking it easy, I’ll try.

They’d rather have you come and infect the rest of the guests? Talk about short-sighted.

I got it at Christmas too – in 2019 – the very beginning. I couldn’t breathe at all which was the scariest part. Maybe that resort will honor your reservation on at a different time. Otherwise – I’d think I’d skip that place in the future. Did they want you and your hubby there sick? Take care – feel well soon!

Well, i tried. Hope you’re feeling better by now. And if not for his age I would wish hubby a few extra days of suffering, but we don’t want him dying on you. Besides, his suffering is your suffering, and that is not good. What a frump!

Oh friend, I experienced it for the first time this year after my dad’s celebration of life, and it was so tough. I’m so sorry you’re going through this, especially during your birthday and Christmas. Sending you so much love and healing vibes. 😘

So sorry. I am sick today, myself but I think it’s a light case of food poisoning.
Did your Birthday just pass too or is it coming up? Take it easy, in any case.

Well, crap. I’m so sorry it finally caught up to you (and especially sorry that you had to cancel what would have been a fantastic getaway). First The Travel Architect, now you. So much for natural immunity. 😦
But what I really don’t understand is, why did your hubby wake you up to test him? Did he not know how to do it himself?

That’s a good question. My husband can be paranoid when it comes to illnesses, no doubt he thought he was literally dying and had to be rushed to the ER. He wanted to be tested right that minute and didn’t have the patience to read the instructions.
😖

Awww…this sucks so bad. I’m so very sorry the ‘vid screwed up your birthday AND holiday getaway.
If I were closer, I’d have made you some warm goodies for your throat. Nothing worse than being at death’s bed and not being taken care of. XO
