Miscellaneous missives.

.

Are you a leftover person?

My husband was the second of 9 children in a home where food was never wasted. He loves them all. I was a picky only child and am a bit more selective.

There are meals I will happily eat the next day and others I’ll only eat when freshly cooked… but in our house? I’m not allowed to scrape plates into the trash.

Unfortunately, saving does not always translate to eating.

.

.

My husband doesn’t want me to throw anything out, but he also doesn’t want to eat nonstop leftovers which means our refrigerator often looks like this.

.

.

Three chicken and rice casseroles, a stewed pork chop with onion gravy, a Caesar salad from a recent restaurant lunch and two spaghettis.

Have you ever eaten leftover Caesar salad? It’s basically wilted slimey lettuce with soggy croutons. It’s not the least bit appetizing and even my husband won’t eat it the next day… but he brings it home.

Every. Single. Time.

And then throws it out.

🥴

.

.

Remember my girlfriend who was hospitalized with pneumonia? Just when we thought she was improving…. her kidneys shut down, her blood pressure skyrocketed to 200/120 and she had a mini stroke. Multiple visits to the hospital and a week of worry filled days later… she’s home and on the path to recovery.

You just never know when life will throw you a curve. Hence the much needed mistletoe margarita.

.

.

2025 is not starting off well.

I’m going with #1.

🥴

And one more thing…

I’m not the least bit religious, but for his sake?

.

.

I hope so.

❤️

  1. Leftovers will be the end of me! As a creative person, I can always find ingenious ways of incorporating leftovers into a new meal, but there are limits! I have limits. Leftovers can be used once, not 3, 4 times… Ugh.

Yesterday I argued with the man who took a bag of tortilla chips, poured most of them into a bowl, secured the leftovers with an elastic band to prevent them from going soft and was about to put the bag back in the cupboard when I noticed the size of the leftover tortilla chips.

THERE WAS LITERALLY THREE MINIATURE SIZED ONES AND A BUNCH OF CRUMBS LEFT. Not even a handful.

    Really?

I demanded he either eat it or throw it out so I wouldn’t have to do it. 🙃

Similar things happening with tubs of sour cream, mayonnaise, milk…

Between him and the teens, it’s a frustrating part of cohabitation. 😵‍💫🙃

  2. OK, tearing up here with that last one. If only he had been Catholic, he’d be destined for sainthood.
Geez. Sorry about your friend. How scary. I hope one day soon you’re drinking margaritas together at your favorite haunt.
I’m fine with homemade leftovers, but I love leftovers from restaurants. A couple of times in my life I’ve left a restaurant and accidentally forgotten my leftovers on the table. It seriously makes me feel like Medieval Owl 7, who is clearly a distant ancestor of Angry Bird.
As for my Medieval Owl rating today, I’m a 3. There’s a huge pile of dishes to do, not to mention it’s cat litterbox changing day, but it’s the weekend dammit, so that deserves 2 wings up.

    1. I watched Carter’s funeral the other day with a box of tissues at my side. A truly good, simple man.
My friend has no physical side effects, but is experiencing some memory loss and slight cognitive impairment. Dr. said it should pass in a month. My fingers are crossed.

  3. OWL #8 a lot of stress I am still dealing with, happily have therapy this morning. I cook for leftovers. So I can have something other than a tuna salad or PB& J sandwich for lunch. Most times I have no problem eating food cold too. Being that I eat wgat I save I have never experienced throwing out food that has gone bad, I once had a housemate who was just like your husband though, so I know how ya feel. Hope your friend mends well ❤️‍🩹

  4. We cook to have leftovers, and if it is soup or stewp we will be having leftovers for 3 or 4 days. Sonetimes we freeze them and use then in case of lazymergencies. We both like cooking, but it is cheaper to make a big meal for two days than one meal for two people. Gail doesn’t eat salads often, but I love them. So I make a big salad and eat it over 3 or 4 days — just no salt or dressing till it is on my plate. Restaurant food we eat at home the next day. The cats don’t care how old it is, just so long as we share.
Especially at today’s grocery prices our food bill isn’t thwt bad.
But tell the wastrel we had 10 k8ds in our family — what was ever leftover? Turkey, sometimes, but not often!
All he is doing is wasting fridge space and energy. If he isn’t going to eat restaurant leftovers, find some homeless people to give it to. They would likely love it. I know I would have!

  5. NO, NO, NO! Leftovers are the scourge of my existence. My son/roommate is notorious for saving the most minuscule of leftovers. I hate wasting food but if it’s only a spoonful of whatever we had for dinner that night, I will throw it away. Because I’ve spent many a weekend cleaning out my new fridge of hordes of Tupperware that have green mold covering one or two spoonfuls of food. Like the half of the chicken parm I made a week ago that he swore he was going to take for lunch the next day, ugh 🤢.

That last image did make me tear up, I’m not going to lie. He did so much more after his president y than most do during, he was a true humanitarian 🙏💜.

  6. I’m going with owl number 7. Kind of an, “I’m OK, but I’m not sure about you” look going there. I’m sorry about your friend, I hope she gets better, soon.

As for leftovers, I’ll eat just about anything, but I never take salad or plain pasta home from a restaurant. And, if my wife makes a meatloaf (something she doesn’t eat) I will eat it until it’s gone.

  7. At first, I thought you meant your husband was a leftover. Totally subverted my expectations for this post…
Say what you will about his presidency, I don’t think anyone would argue he wasn’t an incredibly decent and genuine man.

  8. Nooooo to leftover salad!!

I once hosted a spaghetti dinner where we intentionally waiting till it was a day old. Is it leftovers if you didn’t eat it till day 2??

As a lazy person, I’ll sometimes make rice, 2nd day add a can of soup, 3rd day add more soup + pasta, etc.

I’m happy that your friend is home.

    Owl #2.

  9. We eat a lot of take out, which is usually enough for one evening. Unless, of course it’s pizza or Chinese, which never lasts beyond the next day.
Home cooking is a little different. Soup is made in large batches with the leftovers, a couple gallons, bagged up and frozen, where it gets even better. Lasagna and macaroni and cheese the same. Other leftovers get a chance until Sunday, grocery day is Monday, then they go to the trash to save on terrifying microbiology experiments. I don’t know how it would work on croutons, but a paper towel, two if they’re cheap, will keep your lettuce in an acceptable state for a couple of days. Croutons can be reconstituted in a toaster oven, breeder reactor or Hadron supercollider, whatever you have in your kitchen. I have asked for a few extra croutons with my to go box and there usually wasn’t a problem. All this and a quarter will get you a cup of coffee which you don’t even like.😒

  10. I love leftovers–whether I cooked the food or it was from a restaurant. Oh, and I even like leftover salad—but not Cesar, which I don’t consider salad, because yuck.

I’m so sorry your friend went through all of that—you never know! Hopefully she is on the road to recovery with no setbacks.
