Because we missed His Lordship and I have a patient husband.

.

Have you ever been to a cat cafe?

I hadn’t, but always wanted to… imaging myself sipping a cup of tea surrounded by purring felines. So when I saw an advertisement for one right on our planned route for the day, I had to stop.

.

.

Mind you… though the husband loves cats, he wasn’t totally on board with this plan.

.

.

It was a small place, with everything appropriately cat themed.

.

.

And though I wanted iced tea, all they had was chai… which was grossly over sweetened.

No matter… we were going to pet some cats!

Or were we?

.

.

Turns out my dream of leisurely sipping and petting was ill formed as the actual cats are not allowed anywhere near the food and beverages. They’re in a separate room, which because we always have bad timing… was hosting a book club that wouldn’t be done for another half an hour.

.

.

At that point the husband wanted to leave, but he loves me and indulged my desire to stay. With 30 minutes to kill we ordered overpriced sandwiches to go with our overpriced beverages and settled down to wait.

When the book club ladies started filing out of the chambre des chats, we disposed of our trash and made for the door… where we found a sign.

.

.

At this point my husband really wanted to leave as he discovered it would be $20 for us to enter and pet cats… for 20 minutes.

But remember….

He loves me.

.

.

So in we went.

.

.

All the residents are up for adoption.

.

.

And most of them were asleep.

.

.

With the exception of little Miss Attitude…

.

.

And this poor fellow who was thin and looked ill, though we were told he belongs to the owner and is just old.

.

.

There weren’t a lot of cats, maybe 6.

We weren’t allowed to pick them up or sit with them on our laps.

And there was definitely no leisurely sipping and petting.

Conclusion?

Cat cafe – great idea.

Mediocre reality.

  1. Unique idea. I never heard of a presentation quite like this before. If they are looking to place more cats for adoption, one would think the prices would be more reasonable. I suppose the money goes to pay for food and other care, though.

  2. Search ‘cat cafe rules’ (as I just did) and you will find that there are some general rules – like ‘don’t pick up the cats’ or don’t disturb sleeping cats…some do let you eat and drink in the cat lounge – time spent in the lounge varies from cafe to cafe, I didn’t check out the entrance fee but every cat cafe I’ve read about charges one…

  3. I have not been to a cat cafe. But I know of one that wouldn’t be far to travel to. I have walked past it many times with down there when going to audiology and now the cochlear implant team.

The cat cafe I know of you are advised to book to ensure you get a seat. But you can call in too. But as it can be busy, the booking iss recommended.

There is a time limit. I can’t remember what it was then it being longer than you would have had. And you are only paying for food and drinks which are expensive I believe. But the extra is going towards the cats, feeding and vets. There is no separate room. So no extra surprise like you had to pay an amount to see cats on top if food costs. Your food is served covered. So that you can eat and drink with the cats. But keep your food covered.

And the rules are not to pick up the cats, or move them off the chair, or wake them up. There may he other rules. But it has been a while since I looked at their website. So I can’t remember. You sit on a seat where there is one available and let the cats come to you. If they do. And there all up for adoption.

It all looks fun from the outside, looking in. Sometimes I see the cats on the windowsil. So I am having pleasure looking from the outside, if they are. 😊

      1. I wouldn’t have expected it that way you experienced with regards to paying before you see them when you have already paid for food and drinks and having the two seperate. It’s not how it is done at the cat cafe here. So if I had visited that one you had, I would have been disappointed.

      2. Here’s a video link to the cat cafe I know of. The net cover thing on the table next to the cat is what you use to keep your food covered while eating and hopefully spending time with some of the cats if they join you.

I did not know until I looked out of curiosity to see if the cafe filmed to show their cafes.

      3. I looked on their website today at Kitty Cafe in Nottingham and there is an additional charge on top of the food. £8 adukts and £6 for children. Booking a table is for an hour. But if you want longer, to enquire. (So whether that would cost more, I don’t know if you wanted longer.) But if I was going to Kitty Cafe as a treat, I wouldn’t mind that charge for an hour on top of the food at this cafe. It’s not like I would be going regular. And from looking on Google, the entry fee works out cheaper than the cat cafe you visited. I hooe you find another cat cafe that is different to the one you visited for an experience, if you plan on looking around for another.

  4. There are many cat cafes popping up out here and they vary. Some have great coffee and artwork, but skittish cats. Some have bad coffee, but are super clean with very social cats. Some even have cats who like coffee and will deliberately try and spill yours!

  5. We have a good interactive cat cafe in Long Beach. Or, we did – it allowed full interaction with the cats. They had little portals to a privacy room for when they were over people. The price was $12/hour and they offered a “study special” for 3 hours at a discount.

For awhile, we had a mobile cat cafe – just a few kittens, cold coffee, and sweets. It was wonderful, but stopped when the founder got a different say job.

Don’t let 1 bad cafe turn you off all of them, others might be better!!

  6. There was (I think it went under) a cat cafe here. Same deal – first pay for your coffee, then pay a separate fee to go into the cat room. What if the cat jumps on your lap? Do they kick you out? (Or aren’t you allowed to sit down?)

Cats seem to know I’m allergic to them – or maybe they’re just attracted to the fact that I’m not going to go out of my way to touch them, so they want to touch me. Cats whose people claim they never come out when guests are over try to jump on my lap.

  7. I’ve never been to a cat cafe either, but I always assumed they were a lot more hands-on (and it didn’t cost extra to actually pet them).

I think I’ll stick with Laverne and Shirley and a freshly brewed pot of Dunkin’ Medium Roast instead
