.
The 70’s were an interesting decade.
It was an era of political upheaval and social unrest. Vietnam and Watergate were serious issues.
Shag carpeting and lava lamps were not.
I was a kid and fondly remember wearing a purple suede fringed vest with purple and grey striped bell bottom jeans. Mini skirts, halter tops, thigh high boots… women’s fashion was bright, bold, colorful and an awful lot of fun.
Men’s?
Not so much.
.

.
Sorry guys.
I still have nightmare about your leisure suits.
😳
.
I remember a neighbor man named Skip who wore leisure suits and had his hair permed into a frizzy round mess like the dad on the Brady Bunch. He rocked that look like no one’s business.

If you’re going to do it?
You have to own it…

Or rent it out so you can move on to practicality later.

lol omg out on the dance floor my friends looked so good in them with their platform shoes. We saw micro mini’s, maxi’s, Nehru jackets (mandarin collars), gauchos, elephant bells, midriff’s oh those were the days. I graduated at 18, in 74(March child). I went from American Bandstand to the disco floor and strobe lights.

I was never a disco fan. But I did have some great platform sandals!

I, too, grew up in the 70s, the era of “Disco”, and I can tell you even then I would not have dressed like these toasted geeks. Can you imagine showing up to a Disco Night wearing these thrift store rejects? Is that Guy on the right wearing one black and one gray sock? Geeze. I am pretty sure this catalog shot was the exact point that Sears started their slide into obscurity.

Don’t forget those stylish white loafers…

When my dad got married to his second wife, his best man/brother threatened to wear a baby blue tux with ruffles. Instead, they both wore brown tuxes. I still think baby blue would have been an improvement.

Omg, the weddings and proms of the 70’s.
I’m dying…

What in the heck is up with those yellow men’s shorts?!?! Yeah I remember my dad owning not one but two pairs of white loafers. As a kid I didn’t really pay attention to what my parent’s wore, but a couple of years ago going through a box of old photos I came across my dad’s lack of fashion sense…..lol.

My father never dressed that way.
Ever.
For which I’m eternally grateful…

You were lucky. My mom made me wear dresses that she sewed. She had passion for rickrack.

That is funny. I remember my mom finding a beautiful dress for me at Lord & Taylor in NY. The only thing was I had to be sewn in and refitted for my stay over birthday party. I still remember the velvet and the frills and being teased about being sewn up.

That’s quite a story! My mom was bipolar and she would stay up all night sewing. At one time I had more than three dozen dresses in my closet that she made for me. All I wanted was a pair of jeans or bell bottoms.

At least you might have learned sewing!

I tried. I was horrible at it.

yes, so was my mom and I which is why i was sewn into the dress by mistake after the zipper broke. No sense wasting a pretty dress by hanging it up.

I was wondering why you were sewn into the dress!

My mom saw a good deal at L & T and most likely bit on the deal only to later discover a faulty zipper.

That makes sense. It’s a great memory and story.

Yes, although I remember telling one of the girls at the party and she promptly babbled it to everyone. funny the things you remember. My mom had a great sense of style and fashion though. I do remember that.

It is funny the little moments that stick with us. Mostly they are ones that hurt, don’t you think?

You have to work harder to let the good prevail although that teach me a lesson.

We speak of following today-how many followers do you have for Instagram, social accounts, YouTube, etc. but I now have new evidence from the posted JC Penney Catalogue that it began earlier. Sometimes when I was growing in the 70’s….

I remember gas lines. And I think the people who came up with some of the fashions during that era should have been jailed. For life.

As someone (I forget who) has said, it was more fun being 20 in the 70s than it is being 70 in the 20s.

I remember men wearing polyester leisure suits; ugh, not breathable, and we lived in South Florida. Can you imagine?
I was young, but I remember having white Go-Go boots! 😉
