.
As you know, we have always had a resident red squirrel menace.
.

.
I’m sure this isn’t the original terror from years ago, but one of her numerous demon offspring.
.

.
She teases the cat, poops on the patio furniture…
.

.
Shreds the deck posts, excavates passages through the woodshed walls, chews holes in the man cave/Barn Mahal, burrows into the house eaves and builds nests everywhere to continue her accursed family.
.

.
I know this because…
.

.
We’re knee deep in the destructive little bastards right now.
.

.
Not good!
Not good at all….
😫
With all the (gray) squirrels we have, we hardly ever see the little ones. Ours haven’t caused much in the way of damage, but I won’t say anything about your being cute.

We have grays as well, they eat side by side with the reds. Much as I wish they would run the little bastards off.

Well, please don’t encourage the reds to move southwest.

If I could?
I would…

Aw, she’s cute, but I get what you mean…
I saw a fat raccoon come out of my back deck area this morning as I strolled to my little cabin and wondered what destruction he caused back there. I feel ya!

We have two raccoon families that visit nightly. Other than raiding the bird feeders and occasionally stealing a suet cage, they’re polite guests.

Years ago we had a squirrel *friend* who I named Fuzzy and he got way too friendly with our deck and the flower pots on it. They are destructive little demons.

We have no trouble with the grays, but the little Red Devils are really destructive.

Sounds like you need a Squirrelinator. It looked to be a non-lethal trap when I saw one, so you could release any other critters it caught…

$80 at their site, the highly original squirrelinator.com. For what is essentially a box company, that URL isn’t exactly thinking outside the box. Which is good?
No idea how good it is. The one I saw was empty in a land thick with squirrels.

Our reds are worthy opponents. I doubt they’d fall for it….

Wild animals in urban environments have adapted EXTREMELY well to avoiding human traps. It’s impressive and irritating.

It’s ground up squirrel that makes my tomato crop so amazing. Yup. Ground up squirrels. Nothing else.
Squirrel.

My grandmother had a whole system for getting rid of squirrels after they destroyed a portion of the attic. One of these days I’ll get around to a post about it.

We have at least six regular greys. They ARE cute, and so far haven’t caused any problems. A couple are bold enough to stand right outside the kitchen, waiting for me to come out to feed them. They know too that the peanuts are kept in the garage and will follow me or sometimes run ahead. (One particular jackdaw dies this too)
The two bolder ones are best pals with my cats. They sit side by side and the cats just let them get on with eating. The other day, before I put any food out, Lulu and one of the squirrels were greeting each other. They went nose to nose, then had a wee sniff of each others scent. Then sat down together till I got the peanuts!
Really!

That’s so sweet.
Greys are welcome here, just wish they’d kick their red cousins to the curb.

Wow. There are definitely bold squirrels out here, but not brave enough to go face-to-face with my dogs or cats (who are a wee bit murdery).

I can’t poison.
No matter how much I dislike them, I won’t.
And yes, I’ve tried red pepper flakes, moth balls, essential oils, critter ridder spray … even coyote urine.
Nothing works.

Oh, I won’t do poison either. Terrible for the ecosystem–out here, you poison a rodent and the poison then kills the raptors, the coyotes, possibly your own pets. Absolutely not.

Good for you! Live and let live

We did evict the O.G. mother red and her brood from our house eaves one year though… she was NOT happy.

Sorry about the eviction but all good things must come again… And I don’t mean to be rude BUT (as we say in south London, UK) your “red” squirrel looks awful grey to my eyes..

Ours aren’t as nearly as dramatic as yours.
I’d wager they’re much more destructive too…

Your red demon is so big! No wonder she’s so destructive. We have chipmunks, but other than destroying one chaise lounge, they’ve left everything else alone.

We have a chipmunk family under our shed. They’re no bother.
