.
I think I’ve mentioned my waning interest in Christmas over the past few years. After decades of being crazy for the holiday and decorating anything that stood still, I’ve reached the point where I write cards, put up a few wreaths and call it good.
The husband and I stopped buying each other gifts a few years ago as well. The love is still there but when you’ve been married as long as we have? It just becomes more unnecessary stuff.
Instead of the normal Christmas celebrations? We take a trip.
This year I had a two week getaway to the Berkshires planned and paid for. Snowy mountains, hot buttered rum, quintessential New England villages… the literal Norman Rockwell Christmas because we’d visit Stockbridge as well.
And then?
.

.
This.
.

.
Right before we were supposed to leave, the husband hit a deer.
.

.
Only a half a mile from our house, at dusk.
.

.
It came flying out of the woods and he didn’t have time to stop.
It was killed… and my husband limped home with a damaged car.
😰
.

.
And then our vacation died as well while we dealt with insurance claims, tow trucks, mechanics and body shops as well as the first snow of the season.
.

.
We could have cut it down to a one week trip but as bad luck would have it my husband’s previously troubled tooth picked this week to get infected, be extremely painful and now requires surgery.
Ho! Ho! Hell….
Last year we caught Covid for the first time which ruined our holiday plans, this year it’s deer and teeth.
We just can’t win.
😫

I’m dropping the tree photo because we didn’t get one this year since we planned to be elsewhere.

Oh no, so sorry to read all this. This holiday season will pass soon and then life can resume normally, right? Wishing you an uneventful rest of the year.

At this point, uneventful sounds great.
Thanks.

That sucks. Every member of my family who lives in the Northeast hits at least one deer every other year. Sometimes more. And I know how it is to have a holiday feel cursed. I hope he feels better soon and you get to do something Christmassy.

Every time I tell someone he hit a deer… they say their father/brother/friend/sister just hit one too.

Yikes! What a disaster! Here’s going New Year’s Eve is better!
And this means next year will be amazing to make up for all this, right?

Damn. I’m so very sorry. Terrible timing, terrible luck. I know you were looking forward to your Christmas getaway.
One of my biggest fears while in GA is a deer or bear running in front of our vehicle; it happens a lot.
I hope his tooth is taken care of, he feels better, and you guys can find some joy in the holiday season.

As long as he has a pain free holiday, I’ll be happy.

Your tree is beautiful and sometimes a quiet Christmas can be a good one. Deer can be very fast. Sometimes it is hard to stop and prevent an accident. During hunting season in the Catskills, we learned to be very careful of hunters invading the property and of deer shooting onto the road. Wishing you better times.

Thank you.
Quiet it will be…

A few Christmases ago, we had a deer step right out in front of us on a back road., We were only doing 25 mph so the deer apparently was not severely injured. The car didn’t fare as well. That was a real bummer for us so I get the feeling. Thank heavens your husband came out of that crash ok, and hoping he’ll feel better soon after the dental work.

It’s amazing how much damage it can do even at slow speeds. Think the husband was going 45…

Cupcake and I are in pretty much he same boat. We went so far as to sell our beautiful 7′ fir “fake” tree. Gifts? Sure, small ones, but what’s to get when all the getting is done as needed?

We’re drowning in stuff we don’t need, that’s why a Christmas vacation works.
Or did, until now.

I am so sorry. We were thinking of getting away to the coast but it looks like bad weather is heading our way. Storms near the coast mean flooding, mudslides, power outages …. traffic jams. I’m too old to find all of that fun the way I once did!
I hope your hubby can at least celebrate the day pain free!

Deer are such a menace. My son hit one with his truck earlier this year, and because it’s an older vehicle and it’s hard to get parts, and mechanics are busy and overworked, he was without his truck for six months. Luckily my husband and I were able to lend him one of ours, which was a minor inconvenience for us (we’re retired and don’t have to go anywhere if we don’t want to). Don’t know what he would have done otherwise.

Thankfully we have two other vehicles, but it’s still a great nuisance. Sadly, this has been an unbelievably bad season for deer accidents so far.

Oh dear! Literally “oh deer!” So sorry this had to happen and ruin your vacation. I’m glad your husband is okay if not the car — in spite of his tooth.

Thanks. He was lucky… the deer came from his left and sailed across the hood instead of through the windshield.

Oh, my…that’s terrible. I worry all the time about hitting a deer around here. Hasn’t happened yet, but it’s almost a rite of passage. I’m just glad your husband was okay!

This is the fourth deer he’s hit since we moved back 23 years ago. Two of them were with my car. It never gets any easier, financially or emotionally.

Oh, geez. The only comfort I can give is that if bad things come in threes (car, tooth, cancelled trip), you should be safe for a while. But seriously, you have my sympathies. What a gigantic bummer. I hope you can find some holiday magic among the rubble.

To be honest, we’re just ignoring it this year. At this point, why bother?
