Netflix me.

As you know Casa River recently entered the modern world of high speed internet and can now stream at will.

All hail technology!

So the minute after we were hooked up?

I installed Netflix, because I felt deprived for years and that’s where a lot of good shows live.

First on my list to binge?

Peaky fockin’ Blinders .

That was a wild Irish ride and I loved every (admittedly violent) minute of it.

Then I watched season one of Wednesday, which I was really looking forward to. Charles Addams was a client of my father’s back in his Wall Street days so that darkly twisted family has always been a personal favorite. (Did you know it was originally a cartoon?)

Jenna Ortega is good in the title role, and I did enjoy Thing, but I have to say I found it to be a bit too teenage-y /young adult for my taste. Parts of it are wonderfully quirky but as I’m watching season two… I feel my interest waning.

This was a decent did he do it or did he not mystery. Well acted and cast. Where good people can be bad and bad people can be good.

I had to try Stranger Things. There’s been so much hype about the show over the years I knew I was missing something amazing.

Then I watched season one and thought, really? Okay, sure….the kids are cute. But again, it was too young adult /teenage-y to seriously hold my interest. If you tell me future seasons are better I might continue, but only if I trust you.

I started this… and though it feels like you’re back in the Peaky Blinders universe… I don’t find the characters nearly as compelling as the Shelby clan and may not continue watching.

The husband and I had an epic two season binge of this marvelously disturbing peek behind the curtain of our nations capitol on New Years Eve. Machinations and manipulations abound in this tight political thriller whose motto should be trust no one!

But now to the point of my post…

I already put Better Call Saul, and Orange is the New Black on my list.

So my question is…

Do you have any other recommendations for this late to the show but now newbie Netflix subscriber?

  2. I loved Wednesday, I mean if you love the dark and macabre and like the original Addams family films that it is. What I didn’t care for is the portrayal of Gomez Addams, Luis Guzman isn’t a good fit. Neither is Cathrine Zika-Jones for that matter, but I like Wednesday’s and Enid’s characters. I absolutely LOVE Peaky Blinders and keep on the lookout for the film coming to Netflix this year. It’s set right before WW2 and shows how the Shelby family handles the war at home, abroad and within their own clan. The Man on The Inside with Ted Danson is a great series, season two is out and you might like it.

    1. I’m anxiously awaiting The Immortal Man as well, even though they’ve replaced the actor who played Arthur.
      And you’re right, the parents on Wednesday were totally miscast. I like Tim Burton and love dark and macabre, but I guess I prefer unseen creepy to the in your face monsters of this one.

  4. Agree with you about Stranger Things. We watched it because the Husband was into it, but not really my thing. House of Cards is SO good, but it loses steam during the last season or two. I can’t tell you why or I’d ruin the plot. Nothing comes to mind immediately for Netflix, but on NY Day we binge watched Down Cemetery Road (Apple +), which was excellent. LOVED the Emma Thompson character.

  5. I liked Season 1 of WEDNESDAY, but was quickly bored in Season 2. STRANGER THINGS always felt like a bunch of nerdy D&D kids from the 80s trying to make that time period/their youthful interests relevant: but what if we add magic and pretend it’s Sci-Fi? Netflix doesn’t have very good comedy series, not that there are many out there. They do have a decent selection of movies, though, like K POP DEMON HUNTERS and the KNIVES OUT mysteries.

  7. I’ve got three for you: First one’s easy. Spartacus, dammit. The sex is sexy, the violence is violent, the treachery is treacherous and the revenge is really sweet.
    You might never believe this one but number two on my list is Bridgerton. It could have been a bit too much about race but it really wasn’t. No violence, very little sex and a fair amount of head scratching. Queen Charlotte, the prequel, was even better.
    Last, I give you CUNK! Cunk on anything, and don’t forget to pump up the jam.

    1. I watched Spartacus when it first came out on Stars years ago. Great series. Going to start House of Asher soon.
      I wondered about Bridgerton .
      Just watched the trailers for Cunk… added it to my list.

  8. Welcome to Netflix! My parents also didn’t like Stranger Things after season one, but honestly, season two is our least favorite. Try to push past it- I think it gets much better, and my teenager’s excitement has been so contagious that maybe that’s why I love it so much. (We cried so much during season five)

    We also loved Wednesday, although I admit it is a bit teenagery. We haven’t even tried season two.

  9. Nothing new is good these days. We, when we stream, tend to watch old shows (from our childhood or further back). You know, stuff from back when people knew how to write.

    Sure, there’s the occasional exception, but I’m generally disappointed by the new stuff.

    The Missus and I made it through season 3 of Stranger Things and then gave up. Season 1 was the peak, and then it was all downhill from there.

  10. We’ve had Netflix since back in the day when it was DVD’s by mail. I’d have to agree about Wednesday – I actually enjoyed Season 1, Season 2 – not at all ,watched one episode and bailed. Stranger Things – we watched a few episodes and couldn’t see the point. Netflix now has “The Big C’ an old(er) HBO show with Laura Linney – try that. “Ripple” it’s getting a lot of traction – it’s – pleasant? My husband and I had/have odd tastes in entertainment so I won’t suggest anything else.

  12. I liked the Lincoln Lawyer, the Pitt and Department Q. A lot of the shows I just can’t get beyond the first season – Wednesday was definitely one of them – Harry Potter meets Twilight. Good actors though!

  14. My problem is I never know what is on which streamer at any given time. I will take a look at the Netflix offering these days and circle back if I see anything specific to recommend. Supernatural just left Netflix, for example. Lots of great stuff out there…just not enough hours in the day or night to consume it all!

  15. Bloodline—family drama set in The Keys-one of Netflix’s first series.
    Ozark—good people making bad choices. It’s maddening. It’s brilliant!
    Afterlife—Ricky Gervais is a genius-you’ll laugh. You’ll cry.

    I loved all three of these.
