Ouch.

.

We live in Maine.

Maine winters are long.

And though we’re having a freakishly warm day today, they’re calling for snow this weekend.

I was hoping to eek by until spring and not order oil for our furnace but the energy sucking bastard demanded more… and man. This time it hurt.

A week ago Sunday I checked the price for our area and it was $3.55 a gallon. Purchasing 400 gallons, which doesn’t fill the tanks, would have cost $1,420. But when I called Monday… thanks to the strike on Iran… the price had risen to $4.19 and because of Middle East unrest the company wouldn’t guarantee the quote for Thursday delivery.

On Thursday, the price had risen to $4.61… an increase of $1.06 a gallon in four days… with me writing a check for $1,844.

$424 more, just like that.

Ouch.

Last night I checked prices again and saw some companies are almost $5.

Damn.

  1. It was 70º here Monday (21º C) and the current forecast is for 3º (-16º C) next Monday.

And of course you know who you can thank for stimulating the economy with higher oil prices. (Hint: It’s the guy who said, “We’re going to get your energy prices down. We’re going to get your energy prices down by 50%.” And, “That means we’re going down and getting gasoline below $2 a gallon.” Lest you get confused by your bill, the website of the US Department of Energy says today, “Thanks to President Trump, gas prices are at their lowest level in nearly five years and are trending lower.”

  2. Imagine heating oil and kerosine are garbage and what truckers are paying each week I went through over 100 gallons per day. We have had no foreign tanks in port since the Iran conflict so this is companies gouging their customers. My propane has been in the $3.80+ range all year.

      1. Everyday? Where are these homes exploding of natural gas leaks? I’ve lived with natural gas for heating and cooking all my life. Not once have I had an issue, thank God. But I suppose I’d be scared of heating oil because of the price and flammability as well.

      2. There were two just this week in New England, one in Taunton, Massachusetts and one in Bloomfield, Connecticut. I swear we hear about them all the time. But you’re right, the price of heating oil is now terrifying.

  3. My healthcare insurance premium went up 21% this year and barely covers anything. I just paid $320 out of pocket for a 15-minute skin check. Trump’s done nothing but make life harder for Americans while enriching himself and his family.

    1. Not sure what he is supposed to do. These insurance companies are private, and many, many laws prevent the Government from trying to manipulate a private market. Obama found that out the hard way. Our Laws do not allow for Universal Health Care, either, no matter what bluster the politicians (or the media) throw out there at election time. Obama found that out the hard way as well. That leaves you three options: drop all insurance and take your chances, pay the premiums, or move to a country that does have Universal Health Care.

      1. It’s not an unsolvable problem. But Trump’s too busy enriching himself and his family. And now spending One Billion Dollars per day of our money on his war.

      2. Never said it was unsolvable, just not by the Executive Branch, nor using taxpayer dollars as subsidies. And, just for the record, you do realize that Trump has donated his entire Salary to Charitable Causes, right? He does not make a licking dime. You must be talking about Pelosi, Ihmar, AOC, Maxine….

      3. You need to read the bias of your sources. My husband taught me that in college. I used to take everything in print as the gospel truth and I was a journalism major. I think every publication has an agenda today. Either left or right. I don’t know any in the middle.

      4. That doesn’t make him without bias or the magazine. The magazine has great writing. I like reading it.

Do you believe the Pulitzer committee has zero bias? Did the reporter bring up the fact that Nancy Pelosi has gotten rich off her years in congress? Or how many people of both parties enrich themselves in office? Or previous presidents?

Or was it only about Trump and his family?

A balanced article would look at other presidents, senators, congressmen and families and how they enriched themselves in office.

Otherwise it’s a well-written piece with an agenda.

      5. Our insurance premiums were $800 for a family of four before Obamacare. They tripled after that was passed so I can subsidize those who use the “exchanges.” Also, all my doctors quit.

  4. Ouch is correct. We had two cold rainy days but are back close to 80 degrees, also. By weekend we’ll be in the low 90s. I’m grateful we have natural gas and rarely turn on the heat. What kills us is AC. Our CA house was much more expensive to cool because it had single-pane windows and a tile roof with no attic or insulation. We paid more than $1200 a month in the summer to cool it. Now we’ve got solar, an attic they put triple the insulation in and dual-paned windows. What a difference!
