I knew it would be too good to last and on Day 9 post partial knee replacement? My nerve block wore off and the pain came sailing in.
Bam!
I’m handling it, because it’s not like I have a choice. But my happy go lucky recovery just turned a corner and now feels like work.
Deep bone aches. Harsh muscle pain when I raise my thigh. Tenderness. Sharp twinges. All the awful things the block was blocking. I’m still walking well without any devices but my quad is screaming during the exercises now.
Boy howdy.
😩
.

.
I’m still swollen, but not as bad as some I’ve seen. From everything they tell me that will be the hardest thing to get rid of. Some people have it for a full year. Bandage comes off tomorrow so that will be an interesting reveal.
Or not.
🥴
This surgery and recovery is a journey. Good days and bad. I know I’ve just started and still have a long way to go … but I’ll get there.
One slow (and now painful) step at a time.
.
Oh no!!!!! I just asked how you were and then I saw this!!!! Holds your hand and offers cookies and coffee. Hope it isn’t for long!

It’s a long healing process. I knew that going in, but now it’s slapped me in the face.

Uugh, I did not have much pain with full hip replacement (posterior). But if I made the wrong move at night, the pain radiated down my leg and I had to move carefully. When I began exercising it returned. I have read that it can take about one year for tissues to recover. I am now in the 10th week. Sometimes I still read some of the chat boards but more for entertainment.

Mostly, I had to not twist. The knee is so delicate. Wishing you the best.

Thank you.
It is what it is.
Healing takes time…

In comparison with other people I’ve had a very easy time of it. But the block wearing off is an entirely different dynamic.

The pain will eventually go away. The idea that you have a fake knee won’t. 🙂

If there’s no pain? I doubt I’ll care…

I’m actually relieved to hear it wore off. I had images of nerve damage and permanent numbness. But the pain sucks.

It lasted a long time for me and I’m grateful. Hopefully it got me past the worst.

So sorry! At least you had nine days of not dealing with extreme pain. Not much comfort, I’m sure, when you are now dealing with pain. Onward, ho! Hope chocolate is in your present as well as your future.

I was expecting it.
But still…

But still being in pain is awful. My heart is with you, Rivergirl!

This too shall pass.
I just hope it’s soon.

so sorry the pain is there in spades. remember even tiny baby steps count. and as someone else mentioned don’t forget the chocolate w/ all it’s healthy anti-oxidants. but mostly just because of its “soothing” properties.

Baby steps is about all I can manage right now.

Ice is nice. Did you get a recirculating ice bucket?

I did, but rarely use it. Have an extra large flexible freezer pack I like better.

Wow. I guess this is progress, but I wish it didn’t come with pain. I hope it begins to wane.

I do hope this indicates normal healing!

It does. They give you the nerve block to dull the worst of the surgical pain. What I’m feeling now is what I should have been feeling from the beginning, but thankfully didn’t.

Yes, indeed. I had my ACL replaced, not as big of a deal, but I remember that block well.

Wow! That must have been some good Nerve Block to last 9 days. Hope you have pain meds or something to help you, now.

I’m just taking Tylenol and ibuprofen. Hate the stronger stuff.

I would ask for another dose of painblocker. Tell them you twisted your knee standing up. Another 9 days pain freeness might get you past to a better place.Depending on your POV, after one surgery they gave me a pain killer machine, which was hooked up to my IV. It took away so much lain, and got me so stoned, I was racing back and forth from one end of the hallway to the other at 3:00 AM. When I used up the painkiller, I went in search of more. The nurse looked 60 plus hours devat me and said, that painkiller was supposed to last 3 days, not 3 hours. And I had to wait 60 plus hours hbefore they would give me more. Lesson learned

Nope. No heavy drugs for me. There’s pain, but nothing I can’t handle.

Your choice. I myself avoid painkillers except at the very worst of times. It helps that I have a very high tolerance for pain, together with my belief that pain is our first warning of something wrong happening to us. To me, persistence of pain tells me to see a GP.

My pain tolerance is very high and has served me well in the past.
The one time I would have liked opiates? After a horrendously painful procedure? They only gave me a muscle relaxant.

If your surgery involved bionics, it should be a very interesting reveal indeed!
You do have the pain meds, you know. Taking them as directed wouldn’t be the end of the world.

Damn.
I should have asked for the bionic knee.
