The husband came home from the gas station with something cradled in his hands the other day.

A perfectly dried and preserved Monarch butterfly he found on top of the gas pump.

Such delicate, beautiful creatures.

He (she?) will reside on the auxiliary desk in our home office, with the hummingbird nest a girlfriend gave me and the pig made from nut shells I bought in Chinatown when I was a child.

That, dear lady, is some serious rock hard, battle tested, Jarhead kind of stuff right there. Ooh fuggin’ RAH!

I second what Kenny said, just a tough and rugged Marine!

I have a hummingbird nest too! With bonus of 2 abandoned eggs that look like tictacs.

Even better! Though I’m sad they didn’t hatch…

Same. The nest was just outside my bedroom window. The day I noticed it (from afar) was the last time the mother was there. If she’d returned I would have gotten an internet webcam to watch the nest. Maybe she sensed that and was shy.

Oddly, I never thought of hummingbirds as having nests. But of course they do!

I’d never seen or felt one until my friend gave me that. It’s surprisingly soft.

How do you determine the sex?

The males have two small black dots on the bottom/backside of their wings. (think balls)
The females have more prominent/thicker black veins throughout their wings, with no black dots.

Interesting. Though you realize I’ll have to check for butterfly balls from now on….

I had milkweed growing this year and had high hopes………….but nothing.

We used to have a lot of milkweed, now only a few blooms here and there in the field. Not enough to attract them I guess.
