.
When I was flipping through my old baby book that was recently rescued from the cave of crap cellar, something interesting fell out.
.

.
It was from my pediatrician’s prescription pad and instead of filling the younger version of me with drugs and antibiotics as doctors do today, it recommended a few simple home remedies for colds and sore throats that mothers have been using since time began.
Those really were the good old days.
🙂
.
What a great find!
My mom and I often talk about what my grandmother used to do to help her girls (there were 4) when they were sick and used similar remedies.

I remember my mom giving me honey and lemon juice for sore throats. It was wonderful.

My mum used to make me a toddy but with a little rum instead of whiskey. I now include a little bit of fresh ginger to the mixture to relieve cold symptoms.

That was when doctors were doctors, not walking drug salespersons. Oops! Sitting drug salesman. I can remember when doctors made housecalls, which ended around 1955 for us in Winnipeg. Sadly, Dr. Magnusson had a heart attack and died at something like 30 years old. He was a really fun guy, kept us in stitches while he examining us in our own beds. Suddenly he was gone, and we had to go visit some creepy guy in his office. I wouldn’t doubt he would be arrested as a child molester these days. I have no clear memories, but I know I was nervous everytime I had to go see him, as were my sisters. But by then, Mom was dead too, and the sperm donor had become a rapist and child abuser himself. Maybe they were a team…
Sorry for the bad memories, but I am supposed to get them out as soon as I have them. Good for me, not so much for your readers, though. Again, wpologies.

I have a girlfriend who used to work as a sales rep for a major pharmaceutical company. She made big money and traveled extensively all expenses paid, but after a few years he conscience couldn’t handle it and she quit. The stories she can tell about unscrupulous pill pushing doctors? Truly horrifying.

Major drag, dude, glad you made it all the way to good.

My ‘doctors of your youth’ memories are of a lady doctor with a heavy Irish accent who was a chain-smoker – that was early 70s.

Yuck! Even when I was a smoker, ctainsmokers reeked. So for a few years, I reeked! But I am 37 years since I have been tobacco free. One of the best decisions I ever made.

I come from a time and place where a drop of whiskey in hot tea with honey was considered a sensible way to ease a child’s throat pain. Don’t hear that advice much anymore, do you?

You don’t.
And you should…

My mom used lemon juice and honey for sore throats as well. And hot toddy’s too, with cinnamon, a bit of tequila and lemon. Ahh, yes, good times 😁.

Much more soothing than antibiotics…

I remember my mother had a machine you put the Vicks Vapo-Rub into and it filled the room with “medicated air.” It was heating it up and creating steam that helped my sinus issues. They have them even today, although the technology is different and they don’t look a bit like the one she had for me. And of course, hot tea and honey was a must…alcohol optional.

My mom worked in a hospital for thirty years, but she was, and still is, a genuine hillbilly witch doctor. A lot of her internal medicine therapies and interventions would probably be considered child abuse these days, but they worked. Case in point, the sugar tit for teething babies. Put a bit of sugar in a hanky, twist it up tight, bind it with a rubber band and hit it with a few drops of whiskey. Junior’s out like a light before you know it.
I get my medical care at the VA and they are very caring and conscientious. I wouldn’t go to our local chain hospital on a bet. Take me to the VA, give me a sugar tit and I’ll wait.

We could use the VA but they’re horribly understaffed and overworked here. Trying to get an appointment is more painful than the ailment you’re calling about. ..

The Asheville VAMC is the best one in the country, so I’m lucky on that score, also because most of my care is for chronic conditions, which helps me get in front of it by scheduling well in advance. On those rare occasions I have had a more acute issue, I have had to wait, but they always saw me. Pass me a sugar tit.

I’m all about natural cure-alls as long as they involve whiskey.

What, no whisky for the baby who can’t sleep?
I love the old school, no RX remedies still today.
