The weather was perfect. The tourists were nowhere to be seen. And my husband is still retired… for now. So I stuffed him in the car and we crossed something off my endless Things To Do In Maine bucket list.

Viles Arboretum. A 224 acre non profit botanic garden run by the state which conserves wetlands, forest and fields and offers free access to anyone wanting to enjoy miles of nature trails.

There were sculptures scattered throughout.
.
.
Most of which were for sale. Though for $15,000, we decided to pass.

.
Most of the walking was easy and the boardwalks over the wet areas were quite welcome.

If you know my husband, you know he has to stop and read every single word of every single plaque about every single tree.

Scrap metal bird sculpture. Lord Dudley would be terrified.

It was a lovely way to spend the day and we leisurely strolled through meadows that turned to marsh…

That turned to ponds.
.
.
That turned to wetlands…
.
.
And back to meadows.

Boardwalks through forested areas and wetlands is something we have up here too and I always enjoyed walking along there, although not during the height of summer when the mosquitoes become bothersome. What was the bug situation like? It didn’t look bad…
You might want to repeat this exact trip and walk in the fall with the colors and post the comparison pictures. 😊

Technically Memorial Day is the start of the tourist season, but the hoards arrive after the kids are out of school… so later this month.

Love the tadpoles. We have no frogs where I live, too cold I guess. I haven’t seen a tadpo.e since I was a kid. Nice shot!

Are those coins on that wood plank? Tossing coins in the water doesn’t seem very conservational unless they have a secret vault down there…

They are. And it doesn’t.
The arboretum may be conservation conscious but clearly the public isn’t.

I’m more of a sign-skimmer myself. I stop to read, but usually grow bored by the third sentence.

I speed read so when the husband catches up and asks ‘did you even read that?” I can answer all his quiz questions correctly. Drives him nuts.

I’ve not seen a tadpole in a minute. This looks like my kind of place to meander, especially since the weather was pleasant and no other humans were around to bug you.
